Hi All.
Just pick up my 2013 D4, and will be doing a big trip part way round Aust. Asked the service manager where I purchased the D4 about oil that should go into if I require to top it up, he informed me that I can not buy the oil over the counter, but would not have to do any topping up between services,, new car will use oil. Does anyone know.

In the first few thousand Ks I used very little, but still took it back for a top up. Since then it uses so little between oil changes there is no need for topping.
Depends how you drive it as well. Drive normally for the first few Ks and also find a steep winding road for the sheer enjoyment, as well as making the engine work over a range of engine speeds and throttle settings.
My favourite is Bellengen to Dorrigo up the Waterfall Way; had a great run up there following a ML 350TDI Merc a week ago; wifey just hung on:twisted:

My experience was similar to Plane Fixer but I did not require a top up. In fact over the last 2 years of ownership I have not had to add oil other than for my regular service arrangements.
You can buy the recommended Castrol Oil in a 20L drum (take your bank manager with you).
I think that Penrite now have a compatible oil on the market so if you feel the need for a bit of travelling comfort and want to carry some oil you could check you local Auto shop for the Penrite stuff.
Be sure to check that any oil you buy / use meets the required specs as shown in the good book!

Never needed to top mine up between services either.

The oil you need is - Penrite Enviro+ C4 5W-30 - you can get it at Supercheap etc...

Southerns gave me a litre bottle of the oil.....without blinking an eye.
Still have the litre bottle.
It's not a Toyota Diesel, so don't need to worry about using oil.
Touareg came with a litre bottle....never used any oil either.
Only car I have ever had that used oil during the first 5000 was my WRX MY 2002....that was about a litre from memory.

I was one notch below half way after 6000km and needed a litre of oil and the turbo drain fix. All sorted now, I hope, but if the OP has a problem similar to mine (and many others albeit a minority) then he will need to add oil at some stage.
Based on my experience, if I wasn't going to be near a dealer, I'd be getting myself a litre of oil from the dealer and taking it with me. Wait until it gets below half way and make sure you check the level first thing in the morning, erring on under filling because overfilling will lead to an unfortunate series of events.

Just went through this yesterday, apparently you can only buy the said oil in a 20l drum - around $360-$380. Or as the dealer said, bring your own container and they would sell some from their 200l drum. I have done about 8000km and my oil indicator is just one mark above the half way mark. Will I make it to the 26000km service without a top-up? This is my concern. Once run-in it probably won't be a problem. How much oil have others used when running in their vehicle?

No top up of oil required when running in or between service intervals on my D4.
Remember though, my D4 is not your D4!
It does pay to be ever mindful that the D4 is a mechanical device (with lots of eletrical thingy's) and there will be differences in behavour between individual vehicles.

Castrol Edge professional C1 5w-30. This is from their website "A low SAPS fully synthetic fuel efficient high performance engine oil. It combines outstanding low temperature fluidity and high load protection. Low SAPS helps emission control devices like DPF last longer ensuring better engine performance and fuel economy"
this is the stuff I'll be using when my D4 arrives in august.

I don't think that the DPF is included in the Aussie spec by LR.
I have posted before the VIN codes to check if yours has a DPF, but a quick look underneath will tell as the DPF is pretty obvious if fitted.

Mine used more than that by 6000, but I reckon that's enough to get it looked at. How much smoke do you get when you floor it? I got a lot, so had the 2nd turbo drain fix done. Since then, knock on wood Ive done a further 1500km and no movement off full. I'm watching it carefully, checking at least once a week.
It's a diesel so it will smoke a bit under the hammer but you'll know if it's too much.

You're correct. I just got the shipping order and VIN for my D4 and it is 'F' non- DPF. Expecting mine late July early Aug :)

Caution! I just had the something to do with the turbo return tube things fixed. Used no oil until 10,000 km then used 1litre in 1500 km. if I didn't out of habit check this I could have missed it if I had waited until 26,000 km.
Now hopefully fixed.
Note on the oil thing. What bollocks is it that the only place to get the oil is from the dealers. Castrol oil should be made by landrover as the customer to sell 5 litre bottles for a vehicle after all that the 4wd is used to go anywhere. Otherwise landrover should read this and send all owners 5 litres. Especially the price I was charged for this ridiculously priced oil.

No need for (more expensive) low SAPS oil if your vehicle doesn't have a DPF.
Low SAPS oil has to have other more expensive additives because the base oil does not have the same protection as regular fully synthetic oils.
Just check your VIN - SALLAAAG vehicles are fitted with DPF, SALLAAAF vehicles have no DPF.
The off-the-shelf from SuperCheap or AutoBarn Castrol Edge 5w-30 will be fine if your VIN begins with SALLAAAF.
But if you have a VIN which prefix begins with SALLAAAG, then oils like the Caltex Havoline C3 5w-30, or the other "C" oils mentioned above is what you will need to protect the life of your DPFs. That is a low SAPS oil that is compatible with diesel particulate filters.

I suspect Australian D4s do not have the DPF fitted, as it's not mandatory as yet.

I have a MY13 - 2013 D4, with a VIN of SALLAAAN. Would this one have the DPF?
The 2nd turbo oil drain modification, would that be necessary on this model or is it only for earlier models?
Thanks.

Early 10MY Discovery 4's came with DPF only.

I think you can also check on TOPIx for the exact specification for your vehicle.

:huh:I did all the right running in, used no oil at 2000km. Did a trip to the snow in Vic, put in Alpine Diesel as recommended. Checked oil at 3500km, 2 graduations below full.
Rang Road Assist technical as I'm in a country town nearly 1000km from home, the guy said add 250ml at a time then re-check, and I HAD TO add it...I said where do I get the right stuff? He told me Repco or Supercheap...nup, not EXACT spec, but better Valvolin or Nulon apparently.
Anyway added 250ml and it's at full again. I haven't been rough on the engine and I doubt the Alpine temp around -3C for only 40kms in and 40kms out would cause it to burn oil? It didn't like the cold start, but at least it DID start...
 THE TECH GUY SAID TAKE IT TO HE DEALER MONDAY AS HE HAS NEVER HEARD OF ONE USING OIL AT SUCH LOW KMS AND IT SHOULDNT HAPPEN.
Here we go...

The "tech guy" doesn't understand the block... it is made with compacted graphite iron - and it is very common for them to absorb some oil during the run-in period.
It really amuses me that "mechanics" are lately called "technicians"... imho, a hidden agenda to allow higher labour rates.

The vehicle WILL use a small amount of oil in its initial 10K km's.
It also varies greatly depending on use.
Dont Panic its normal.
Its called Running In.;)

Hi Jonesy, I used the title 'tech' only because when calling "1800 Landrover", option 3 is for technical advice. Everything I posted was what the genteelman from option 3 told me today. Apologies if that wasn't terribly clear :) I didn't ask if he was a mechanic.

Thanks sniegy. I'm thinking this is the 'Dads Army' type of don't panic :D
Beats me why they don't have an educated response to my query, and why this tech/mechanic/phone-attendant hasn't heard of it happening and insists I take it to the dealer. He actually said "this is why there is a warranty, to sort these types of problems out". :o

Attached is the Topix spec
If its non DPF dont use anything that does not have this spec 5W/30 – WSS–M2C913–B or C
I have been using Total Quartz 5W-30 9000 future for TD6 2.7 with the same oil spec. Fraction of the cost of the Castrol with that spec

Cheers,
Bit different for the MY 14 SDV6, but yes the manual has the details, you will see that it's a little bit harder finding the right spec as I was directed by the 'guru'. Also a bit miffed that the "ROW Rest Of World" outside the UK doesn't get DPF, but I'm told today that mine has DPF, unlucky me  . But I'll find out for sure, no not climbing under it for now, not that keen to know...
