View Full Version : Winch on back, front or both?

Was watching "trick my what?" The other night and they did a ford f250 and put a hitch receiver on the front as well as the back and got a recovery winch that could be put on like a tow bar so you could effectively winch out in reverse or forward. Thought that was a pretty cool idea. Anyone done it? Or anyone thought about it?

Interesting.

This approach seems to be more popular in America than here, and I don't know that I have seen that kind of setup in my travels.

I was able to find a few mounts on the internet, but none of them had ratings of any sort which makes makes it a no go in my books. In a first for honest advertising, even the eBay sellers didn't bother putting up a rating.

Also are there any bars that come standard with an integrated front receiver, or would that be a custom weld?

I fit was me, I'd be mounting it on the back, just behind the rear x member. Whenever out mudding, and you drive into that big muddy hole.. where's the winch?? 2ft deep in sludge! Not only that, winches, spare wheels, fuel tank and box of recovery kit positioned at the rear of a vehicle make for a very balanced vehicle... Better handling, tyre wear, stability etc. Just my opinion. :)

There are other things to consider where do you carry it when not mounted? and have you tried to fit one after you become bogged:o I like my front mounted winch and a second car to winch from behind if needed:)

Yes, although not yet used in anger, I have receivers front and rear, with HD (70 mm) cabling and 300A Anderson plugs installed by joe.woods and a Runva 11 XP sitting in a receiver cradle. The winch has both cable and remote controls, which could be handy, especially for rear recovery.
If Tim/Trackside ever gets back to me I can buy and install a 160 and a pair of isolators and fuses to finish off the installation.

The front receiver was designed and built via Steve at Lifestyle in Morley and slots in well where the winch would otherwise fit.

Even though the cradle has 2 good handles, the winch is a bit heavy to manhandle single handed in my later years, but the benefit is I don't have to lug it around inbuilt for 90% urban driving.

Could be some fun and games trying to connect up the winch in a precarious situation and needs to be carried loose in the car until/if required, but how often does that happen for most of us?

If you get serious, I can take and send pics if that helps. Gavin

This is what I have been working on.

Front XROX bar with 9500lb winch with air freespool and in-cab controls

Rear winch bar I designed to similar dimensions as the front XROX to house a 9500lb winch with air freespool and in-cab controls (Still needs some more work to complete).

Swapped tail lights to D2a units and wired LED reverse lights into the rear bar.

Can you tell me where you got those reverse lights and what are the dimensions? They look like just what I have been looking for, I can't see jack when reversing at the moment.

I have winches front and rear both permanently mounted on my 90. (since about 2005)

6hp high mount on the front and a 9.5xp on the rear most of the time.

Both fully hard wired inside and out, albright solenoids etc.

I love the setup

LED Autolamps, catalogue is online and you get them through Autobarn or ARB.

They are ADR approved and 40mm x 135mm.

Nothing new as Landrover have had front or rear winching as a factory option on 101 landrovers from about 1974.
They will work sideways too.

I have seen afew front winch set ups with a small pulley on the front diff so the cable can be run out though the rear for rearwards winching.

Neale, you should advise Jack to stand well clear of the vehicle and it won't be a problem.

I have a winch on the back of the 130 as well as the front, haven't had to use it for recovery yet but it's a boon for loading heavy stuff onto the trailer. If your offroad driving involves bogholes, rear recovery is often necessary. I don't like the receiver mounted electric winch idea, very heavy and awkward item to carry in the vehicle and a backbreaker to mount when you need it.

Nugg_t has a winch in a cradle that he slides into the tow bar receiver.......not sure if he has used it in anger yet

Here's mine.

I also don't like the idea of a receiver mount at all.

whats the mater Pete, dont you like the idea of having to open the back of your 90 and man handle a winch in some sort of a craddle, carry it around to the front on uneven ground, in slop, fit it, hook it up and then start your recovery.....sounds peachy to me :D

101, is a side mounted winch, outboard of the chassis rail tha runs front or back with only a 4000lb capacity. Quite a handy bit of kit, but the original vehicle was designed with it in mind from the begining. A little different to buying a defender or disco and fitting a central winch and running cables etc. Alot of stress could be applied to the chassis via the pulleys for the rope that could be not so good.

Yes it has been done, but mostly by guys that have started with a bare chassis and a central winch is a priority, which means other things take a back seat so to speak.

Petes set up is very good. Especially for what he does. ASk yourself do you need it?

Front for me, cause if I get stuck I want to keep going to where im headed. But yes rear would be good for weight.

I'll bite. How much for a rear bar? It's exactly what I have draw on a napkin for mine to match the xrox I have.

What exactly are you after?

Do you want a winch in there or are you happy with just a standard bar?

Do you require the reverse lights?

If no winch the bar can be made a bit smaller and also not interfere with the towbar.

Have a look at my build thread in my sig line for the materials I used.
