Ok guys we had a lot rain overnight in Melbourne and found both footwells had water, small paddles.

I have already send email Melbourne City Landrover and will be expecting some action on Monday I would hope.

Do you guys know where these leaks would come from especially on brand new Defender?

Cheers

Small puddles?
You didn't get much rain then did you pretty standard feature
If you are interested there is a water ingress manual online if you google it you should find it.

You are right, there is one. I suppose LR service will be using this.

Sounds like a common issue.

Thanks

Don't expect it to be fixed.

Seriously.

A body engineer from Land Rover goes on an exchange visit to Toyota in Japan and watches the engineers developing the latest Land Cruiser bodyshell. He notices that on the workbench they have a cat in a small cage and he asks what it's for. The Japanese engineer tells him when they have finished a Land Cruiser they lock a cat in it and go home. If the cat is dead when they return in the morning they know the shutlines on the doors are up to their high standards. The LR guy likes this idea and when he gets back to Solihull he takes a cat to work and locks it in a Defender and goes home for the night. When he returns in the morning the cat is gone.

No joke, they won't do anything, there is nothing they can do. They're almost designed to leak...

Honestly guys I don't know why LR Dealers don't supply a water ingress manual when you buy a Defender

How on earth a car like that is supposed to go through creeks, I may as well take my xtrail which is fully sealed.

MR LR
1st June 2013, 11:35 AM
The creek gets inside the car, then it doesn't float off like your X-trail would in a creek the depth of Defender door sills. Hence with the right preparation you can go through very deep water.

Sounds like someone didn't research what they were buying...

Dd my research mate and read some of the water leaking issues but honestly thought they would have fixed them in the MY13 models.

Nah! When you consider that a Defender door will still fit in the same hole on a Series 2 Land Rover... Not a lot has changed! Mine leaks, always has, my last one leaked, and I know the next Land Rover I'm buying will leak... That's a given sadly. That is just the first annoying trait Defenders have, the rest will rear their ugly heads over the next few yrs of ownership. Hopefully though the robust characterful smile inducing addictiveness of your new toy will overcome the shabby annoying bits and you will come to love it. If not, then sadly a Defer may not be the vehicle for you.. Stick with it, bolt some additions on truly making it your 'own' and enjoy it! :)

The best way of looking at it, is that it's not a leak, it's a self cleaning interior.

Toyota would charge extra for that!

All defenders come with an inbuilt shoe cleaner for when you climb into it after slogging through knee deep mud.

Not all Defenders leak. The old TD5 never leaked and once the door rubbers got replaced on the Puma, that sorted that out. Grab hold of the water ingress manual and see where your problem lies. I am sure you can fix this.

Mate, always loved the car and its off road abilities and definitely will be sticking with it.
Just a negative reaction given i just picked it last week. I was just hoping that I will not get one with leaking issue. S##t happens I suppose.

I already went to the dealer and spoke to the guy that sold it and told me that they will fix the problem.

my current td5 110 is the only landy I've ever had that does not leak (water in - OR oil out) Prev owner did a good job of sealing it, does not suck in dust either !!

BUT , I hosed out the interior 12 months ago & its still wet under the floor mats, and I have been in 30c + & no rain for the last few months

Anyone got a defender that doesn't leak when it's been in the rain?

Yep! Cos I rebuilt it!;). It is obvious where and why it leaks when you pull it apart.

My 2 cents. They don't have to and new vehicle owners should hold LR to that.

Me :D ... not yet anyway haha!
I feel I should complain to LR I didn't get my full value's worth because I didn't get a free shoe cleaner with my new Defer.
We didn't get much of a wet season up in the tropics this year though, so we'll have to wait and see what happens next year

Yes, and I would have thought so too....so let us know how you get on with the Dealer, & where he said the water was coming from.

I took mine back many many many mannnny times to get the leaks sorted.

My 08 110 had leaks through all five doors, the roof, the windscreen, the aircon, the dash, the join between the upper and lower rear body sections, and one hinge to top it off.

They can get them sorted if they give a stuff, but therein lies the challenge.

If you get offroad and start twisting the body a fair bit you might find the seam on the roof will open up, even if it's been 'sorted' several times. I've covered the seam with a new 3M product called 'Extreme Sealing Tape'; so far its holding up better than anything LR tried.

Good luck.

Hi Project Director!

Sorry to hear about your leaking defender! You dealer should be able to fix it, just keep going back if they don't!

I just took delivery of a MY13 Defender three weeks ago! I have been very pleased, and especially in two areas, one, it seems to be completly dust proof, and two, it does not leak!

I am in Tamworth however, and it really does not rain here!

Not in that Melbourne way anyway!

My dealer had one return this year with a grommet missing somewhere? and also the windscreen brackets (ones on the outside front) were leaking, comming through the bolt heads. Open your front doors and you might see a tell tale sign!

All the best!

Mines dry throu a car wash no worrys but leaks in the rain if its pointed up hill around the passenger door seal and only after it gets back on level ground but the floor lets it back out again. Problem solved

Hey Sue, dunno if that nara bronze is magic or not :D but after the rain overnight down here (first in ages and 80mm at last count) I went out to check and ... dry as a bone.

So yeah ProjectDirector, some of the new 'uns are better and worth chasing up the dealer. Not saying it will stay that way...

My Puma doesn't leak either - well, not in even torrential rain. But it sure leaks driving through a river, and as said, that does prevent them from floating!

Leaks from precipitation are very annoying :mad::mad:, but allowing the interior to fill up during a deep river crossing is very important in my opinion. Floating is not a desired result!!!
I have known people to open their doors when crossing causeways for this reason, and I saw a caravan deliberately filled with flood waters by opening the door to avoid being washed away once. It saved their lives, as they spent the night on the roof of the van until the floodwaters receded about dawn the next day.

Thanks scallops. It was raining all night and morning and thought I check and sure enough a small paddle about 2 inches wide on both sides.
Well I will make sure they fix it and I mean that, we still have a contract for three years.

No leaks in my 2012.... 90 and its dustproof as well. However if parked downhill in heavy rain the roof rack support blocks the drain and water will pour in when you open the door. I was asked if I wanted special seals when I picked mine up but I didn't bother.

I've been lucky mine doesn't leak..well not that I've noticed..but the first time I washed it did have water on the back floor..The rear window had gone down about 10 mm by itself..Another defender quirk..

Most of mine have leaked. So far my 2012 130 hasn't shown signs of leaking but to be honest I won't be too concerned if it does. Actually I'll be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't. As potential problems go it's not a biggie. If it starts leaking I'll just live with it. I really couldn't be bothered harassing the dealers over it, and all the back and forth that that would entail. Or maybe I've just been conditioned (and beaten into submission) from too many years of Defender ownership.

Is it worth fixing.. That is the question. After living through my first defenders 10 visits and 6 months with them attempting to fix, I'm not sure it was worth the effort. That first defender still leaks. But now I have a ribbed sheet of rubber under the floor mats so it dries out quickly. In the process of trying to fix those leaks the dealer and their panel shop used a couple of tubes of silicone, never looked original after that..... I gave up on the end.

My latest defender in Nara bronze is as dry as a bone. I think they took special care on the limited edition.

if its leaking, it is going to be more prone to rusting long term. Bulkheads love to rust, so do doors....

... Nice idea that, leaking from the bottom upwards so as to prevent it from floating away in a water-crossing.

But the OP's is leaking from the top, flooding the car before the ground...

So far, our MY2012 Puma stays good and dry inside during rain.

Being a single cab fewer seals and potential points of ingress. Pretty good with the dust too.

Hi,
I think mine leaks from the heater air inlet on the left mudguard.
There is often a mat full of water after a rain storm, it runs in from the water collecting on the rest of the top of the guard.
If it is parked on a side slope, not so much gets in.
A deep rubber floor mat seems to collect it all.
cheers

When I brought my new Defender back in 2004, in the UK (plenty of rain testing for leaks) I took it back to the main dealer, and complained that it leaked, All the salesman said was, "I am please that you have a good one, I was worried that it would not be a good Defender when you picked it up!! never trust a land rover that doesn't leak, because it will have many more problems!!
Needless to say, that he was only joking, and they did fix the leaks, at least if you go across a water crossing, you know it will drain out well!!

A friend was travelling in the back seat of my 130 a couple of weeks ago and asked me why he could see daylight through the floor. I told him that was because it was daytime.
Doesn't seem to leak noticeably in the rain though thankfully, a bit of a puddle on the floor might not bother me much but getting dripped on is very annoying.

Mines pretty good. only time I get water in driver side footwell is if I pressure clean it near the door rubbers or front vents. So I took to it with a tubeof silicon & she's good. For now.

I can understand his frustration. I'd be ****ed if I spent good coin on a new truck & it leaked. Itshouldn't bloody happen. I hopethey solve it for you, but unfortunately it'll be back.

in my 2013 110 i get water in the passengers side. not enough to flood the floor but a small wet spot. Sometimes I get it some times I dont. I think its how the weatherstrip closes and gets crumpled sometimes

You could always move somewhere where it doesn't rain much, what about WA ?

I don't have any issues with leaks here, just don't ask me about the dust :-)
