Where to get new Battery for S1, 1958, 2.0 Petrol (South Melbourne)

Hi,

I got a good new car battery but not suitable for an old charger. So after using my lights and wipers a lot it ran flat. New batteries are aparently not good for a Series 1.

So either get an alternator to replace the generator, or stay period and get a lead acid battery. I understand lead acid batteries are not that common anymore.

But besides that they are near the airport the staff on duty (in the weekend) don't know what needs to go into a S1 Land Rover of '58.

Does anyone know the battery specifications?

If your dynamo is working properly, I can't see the need to change to a alternator.
I am using a gel battery, and I am running a dynamo.
This combination came about when my beautiful looking Moon battery crapped it self, and I grabbed a second hand gel from a wheel chair.
I have been running a gel for over three years now no problems.

I'd be interested to know what type of battery is not suitable for a Series I. Is it the supplier trying to get out of providing a warranty or is there a problem with your charging circuit ??
I'd get someone to check the charging circuit first and please let us know what battery you had problems with.

If you run a dynamo equipped vehicle at low revs with lights, wipers etc. on then you can experience problems. I've run many vehicles fitted with dynamo's in the UK without problems but if you do a lot of stop-start journeys you may have to put the battery on a charger occasionally.

You need an N70ZZ, this gives the size and orientation of the battery +ve & -ve poles.
Apart from that any 'cranking battery' will do ie. not a deep cycle type.
I run a calcium (sealed lead acid battery) on my Series I with no issues.

I seem to get contradicting information from one mechanic (don't know him that well) and the local Autobarn who aparently put new (calcium) batteries into old timers from the 30's onwards. Not sure what to think. I did notice my belt being somwhat loose, so adjusted that. Need to charge and have another look at how it performs.

when I restored my series one I went to the trouble of getting a Rubber case battery made , there was a company in melbourne that made them to order, was not all that expensive either, (Ariel Batteries Clifton Hill, rings a bell, it was in the 1980's)
no other battery looks right under a Series I bonnet

Maybe someone could copy what they do with motorcyle hard rubber batteries that are no longer available.
They make a fibreglass box that looks like the original battery and drop a slightly smaller battery inside.
