Ok I know a lot of blokes are out of their depth on this subject, but I don't mind vacing, and the Hoover wind tunnel we have is turning into a self destructing piece of junk. Knowing that most landie owners do a lot of research before doing anything I thought I'd put the question to the forum . I know this topic sucks ;) but any feed back would be good ...Gary

We have a Sauber (http://www.sauber.com.au/) which it is awesome but you pay for it.
The filter system is excellent and among the best for people with allergies.
We like the power head for carpets, it is easy for our bad lower backs.
The special head for bed and dust mites is excellent as well.

Defiantly not Miele. Gone back twice to dealer (Godfreys) once under warranty after nearly catching fire. Now it's out of warranty it cuts out when ever it feels like it. Over priced rubbish. The LG it replaced as the "house" vacuum is still going strong. Miele kitchen appliances how ever have been very good. Go for something with an emptyable bag.

Don't go Wertheim. I've had two. And we're talking houses with very little carpet.
Work great when they are working but wheels falling off, broken hoses, failed motor bearings....never again.
Two years into an overpriced Dyson....no issue, works great....just exie...

Most of the crap from Godfreys comes out of the same factory but they do vary a bit, our volta is 6 yo and falling apart but still has excellent suction. The hoover we just replaced it with isnt worth its weight in plastic yet i wont get a 2nd mortgage for a Dyson.

We used to have a Volta wet&dry at the house for 4 years, then we used it to vacuum the dust of the angle grinder used during the construction of 3 steel yachts.
It was working ok when we donated it to the recycle shop at the local tip.
The problem with them for us was the filter system to stop micro particles of dust and not power head for carpets.

Have a Dyson battery powered one at home for the cars etc - don't know about the normal models, but the battery pack model is a complete waste of money. I have a similar size Black & Decker that craps on it.
For the house - the wife is very happy with the Vax wet & dry that we've had for years.
I've bought one of those Shark uprights that they've been advertising on TV for the flat in Perth - it has surprised me and I've been very happy with it so far. I can even live with the lovely purple (violet) colour. :D

I've had Hoovers,Nilfisk and various other brands over the years.
My friends have a Kirby,I borrowed it to shampoo the carpet when I was moving house. After getting frustrated with it at first,I got the hang of using it and I bought my own not long after.
They cost around $2000,but I bought mine of fleabay for $900 or so and it was only 10 months old.
Best vacuum cleaner I've used.Have had it 12 odd years now and the only thing that gets replaced are the drive rubber and the bags.

Just replaced a 20 year old Hoover that caught fire. As we have a LNG haired white cat that sheds like a :censored: I bought a Dyson animal. It is bloody expensive and a little bit fiddly to use, also emptying the canister is a PITA. But the job it does is amazing. Only had it about 4-5 months but so far very happy with the results.

Nearly a year ago we bought an iRobot Roomba vacuum and a few weeks later a Scooba. They are both really good. We have an average sized house with four dogs and two cats. We live on a small farm. To clean the floors we just turn on the robots and off they go.
Roomba does sweeping/vacuuming of hard floors and carpet. Scooba vacuums and mops hard floors only. I was sceptical at first, but now we are complete converts. They are not cheap. Yet they do not cost as much as some Dyson models and yes they do a great job. Very little effort on our part. They are smart enough to cope with obstacles, multiple rooms and the Roomba finds its way back to its charger when it has finished. Much quieter than a normal vacuum. All you have to do is empty them and clean filters just like any other vac. The Scooba needs to have its water two compartments filled/emptied after each job.
I don't use the programmed schedule as the robots would start up when we are not home and set off the burglar alarms. There are accesories included to help the robots navigate the house but no set up issues. They avoid stairs and drop-offs. They detect dirty areas and concentrate on them. Very clever machines.

I would test it against the Sauber by vacum a carpet with it and then go over the same clean spot with the Sauber.
We have done the test against an industrial machine with two motors and the Sauber was superior.
You can get $400 trade in for the Sauber.
Just a thought.

We need a new vac in the next few months as well. We have one on lend from friends that went overseas that are returning soon!
I've heard excellent things about the robots from friends who have purchased them, however they all say you really need a normal vac as well. The robots don't do a deep clean, they do a light clean everyday. Plus what if there is a spill of chips or whatever on the carpet. We have stairs with carpet on them as well... A robot is on the list, but for a while after we buy another normal vac.
The vac we have on lend at the moment is a Wertheim. Definitely like it, but hasn't dazzled me enough to just blindly buy another one. I'm keen to try something else if research and recommendations say so.... So thanks for starting a thread!

I bought a nilfisk g90 allergy vac about 17 years ago. It was about the only asthma approved vac on the market and about the only to have a hepa filter. Today it still works like it did the day I bought it and it has fantastic suction when the bags not full.
This year I bought a dyson Motörhead because Roxy my dog puts out way more hair than Simba my previous dog and so wanted something with a proper powered head and no bag. The suction isn't as good but the Motörhead more than makes up for that with pet hair.

We have had a Wertheim for at least 8 yrs, been fantastic. One of the hoses did break/wear out,got another off ebay,no problems at all.
We also have a dyson battery one,it played up with 3 days left in warranty.Rang them on their 7 day hotline, sent it on post paid to them, they fixed it and sent it back post paid. Also was a note saying all the replaced parts have a two year warranty.
Great service and a great vacuum cleaner.

Surprising that here on a Land Rover forum nobody has not yet commented on vacuum cleaners with Joseph Lucas, Prince of Darkness type performance. Rumour has it that at some stage, Lucas produced a vacuum cleaner and it was the only thing they made that didn't suck! Presumably its performance would have similarities with those of Lucas "inventions" and accessories in many older Land Rovers such as the first self dimming headlight and the first intermittent wiper! Probably anyone repairing these Lucas vacuum cleaners should also have some understanding of the Lucas principle where electricity is conducted by smoke. Also.it seems desirable to have access to a supply of Lucas wiring harness smoke to replace any lost from small fires as well as other commonly needed spare parts.

Picked up a Kirby from the roadside... replaced the belt and washed out the (fabric) bag-holder. PO had'nt bothered to buy the paper bags. :o
Or Godfrey's - built "Hoover" lasted 3 years, around $250 per year. Motor zapped itself. Powerhead was good, the connectors in the suction pipe were LUCAS...
Currently using a very old 'LUX' barrel with (super-quiet) powerhead. Works well and so do all the electrical plugs...
Not impressed with re-badged 'house' brands from specialist vacuum stores... Roadside or cheapies do us now.:p:p:p
Or you pay heaps and buy European, - and pass it on to your grand-kids...

Another vote for Dyson here. Had one 8 years with no issues. Ours is an upright and I haven't seen anything better for picking up cat & dog hair - we have 4 cats, and 3 dogs - 2 of which are Pugs, so we need something decent, and the Dyson certainly is.:)

Hmm a insight into the private life of one Defenderzook. :) Boy that accident must of sucked big time. Any way there is in our Aldi flyer a wet/dry bin vacuum for sale. We had a Sanyo bin vacuum cleaner for that long I think it was listed by the national trust. Bit like the family axe though. Couple of motors along the way, new hoses and heads. The only origanal bits were the bin, wheels and lid. It was the plastic in the lid that finally gave up. Got a cheap Chinese one, you pay for what you get. I`m sure this vacuum does not meet noise regulations. The sound this vacuum makes is amazing. If you had this near a jet warming up it would still be heard. So might have a squiz at the Aldi one.

We just got a 2 and a half year old Kirby Sentria G10 I think it is. Gumtree is your friend. I paid $350 for mine without the Shampoo attachment and I wish I had it. there was one the same with the shampoo attachment for $300 a couple of weeks ago. they go to high on ebay so stick to gumtree. genuine bags a about $35 for a 6 pack from the US on ebay and that is a lot cheaper then the local one. it is not a simple machine but is awesome at cleaning carpet.
I shopped around and worked out I would need to spend about 500 for anything decent. there is a reason why they are selling 20 year old kirby machines on ebay they are built like a tank to the point that they are self propelled.
not worth the 4k new but second hand they are a Bargin.
we can feel the difference in our carpet when you walk on it in bare feet.
thats what I think.

We have a Dyson DC23 Motorhead
Dyson DC23 Motorhead is a barrel vacuum cleaner with a motorised head for a deeper clean on carpets, and Telescope Wrap™ system for easy storage.
I think it is the motor head that makes the difference as it picks up the pile and allows the dirt to come up from between the pile. Very noticeable when you have run the Dyson it leaves visible clean strips where you have run the vacuum.
Brace yourself for the cost.

Our Dyson is 14 yrs old and going strong... No warranty needed and the wife is strong on cleanliness so it gets a good work out!
Kirby - I made the guy look like a goose one day... And he was even less happy when I showed him I could import a 240v version from the USA for less than a 3rd of the price.
Kirby are the Harley of Vacuums..
1940 designs sold in 2013 at a price 3 times the value...

They (Kirby's) might cost a lot of $$$$,but if you want to shampoo your carpet, which is recommended by the manufacturer, you have to trudge down the road, get one from BigW,Kmart or wherever.Lug it back home,do the job, then lug it back.
No thanks, I prefer my all in one Kirby thanks, plus I think it does a much better job than the shop ones.

From my research- The Kirby shampoo system doesn't meet the requirements for warranty from carpet manufacturers whom specify; Hot Water Extraction (and only every 2 years!)
And I will always get a professional cleaner out anyhow - for $150.00 they have far more powerful gear than a Kirby.
Can you imagine it... You ring a carpet
Cleaner and he rolls up in his van, unloads a Kirby... You'd tell him to nick off!
Without the steam power of a serious (vehicle mounted) cleaning unit you're washing most dirt down into the underlay.
To each their own...
This is the wonder of Capitalism :)
Someone will make something for everyone.

Professional job always the best bet but for the money of about $60 ill be getting a kirby system attachment.
Biggest key is the power head regardless of the vac you get.

Well a big thanks to all those that replied, I ordered a dyson DC29 multifloor with the extra turbo head the best price was the good guys, hundreds cheaper than elsewhere but with $90 freight..put it to Havey Norman and they where a little rude, and then retravision Albany, who matched the best price and will deliver free... So thanks again ..Gary
