Against my better judgement, SWMBO has convinced me to use the timber I have stockpiled to build the kids a cubby house. I've got a fair idea of what it will look like, but want to make sure I get the start done properly.

I'll be using 4x 3m coppers logs I salvaged as the corner posts. I've stated digging the first post hole with my U-beaut Bunnings spears and Jackson post hole digger, but how deep should I stick them in? So far I've gone down 650mm, or about 1/5th the length of the poles. Will that be enough if I concrete the posts in? I'll be spacing the posts out about 2m square, and they're about 100mm diameter. Soil seems to be a good rich soil, with a little clay, no rocks or gravel. Ex cane paddock. Yes, a cyclone prone area, no I don't need council approval for something this size.

Cheers

I have been thinking the same idea but I feel that coppers logs are frowned on because of the arsenic in the timber. The commercial ones at Bunnings uses timber from N.Z. that uses some kid safe product. Jim

I set most posts for anything I do about 700 mm, fence strainers deeper if not using a " box strainer assy" if I can...if cementing a square post you need a BIG dia hole our the post will crack the cement from the corner of the post every time, round posts not so bad...Gary. Ps as far as cca, goes unless the kids are going to be chewing the posts they should be ok

Thanks Gary, they're round posts so looks like I might be good. Woohoo!

And not actually sure if they're coppers logs or not, just describing the general shape and size. Just had Telstra redo two pits outside our house this year, so a bit of arsenic might be least of our problems!
