I'm no fisherman & its the first fish I've ever caught, I only bought the rod as an excuse to do nothing.

about to fire up the cobb cooker !

(Also, I see some fisherman kill or throw away catfish, why?? are they not good to eat or what ?? the same chart I have (Fishermans guide , QLD & Great Barrier Reef) says they are 3 star eating , same as the Bream eating star rating )

looks like a bream to me.

my favourite eating estuary fish.

as for the catfish, they can taste muddy...

i quite like them in fish cakes with plenty of garlic

Yellow-fin Bream for sure.

As for the Catfish, most of the strong or muddy taste comes from the gut and rib area. If you fillet and skin them and cut off the rib area, you will find them a very firm white fleshed fish. Great for fish curry as they hold together and break off in nice big flakes.

I saw an old bloke catching them and to clean them he had a six inch nail on a mangrove stump which he pushed the fish onto head first. He then cut around the skin behind the gills and got his fingers inside and pulled. This took the skin and guts off in one hit.

I have tried it a couple of times and end up with a fish with a big hole where the head used to be and me usually flat on my arse with two slippery hands :o
