Hi
Well after another epic weekend of 4x4ing. I almost killed my car (again) by wading through water a bit too deep reminding my self that the P38 is not a Submarine:nazilock:.
I must have taken a whole heap of water through the air intake, Air filter was full of water and the engine choked her self to death. I managed to get out and get the engine started, dried as much water as I could from the air intake and the funny looking bits on the bottom of the pipe from the air inlet to the air manifold.
I eventually nursed the car home. Now to get her running normally again. what do I need to clean, what should i look out for? Obviously a new air filter..
any help greatfully recieved..
I also had a bit of a bang on the exhaust which is now sitting up behind the rear bumper I will probably just use a mallet and bang it back down.
any other hints welcome.
Thanks guys

Well, if the engine is still running you did not water in to the cylinders.
On my P38 submarine adventure a few years ago, it did get in... another (sad) story.
I did have a semi-sub adventure like yours a while back with similar results. What I did was:
- replace air filter
- clean all gunk out of air intake pipe, resonators, and MAF
- remove top intake manifold and clean all gunk/water reside/staining.
Sounds like your exhaust is cactus. Use this as an excuse to lose the single system and get a dual system with high flow mufflers and resonators so you and everyone around you can enjoy that lovely V8 burble...
All good, move along ;)

Just wondering, how deep was the water? I assume you had the wheel liner in.

Hi Thanks for the replies
What is a wheel liner? I don't think I had one in???
Thanks Paul very useful.
I have cleaned out the Air intake pipe resonators and cleaned the MAF.
I have not yet taken the top intake manifold. Is that an easy job?
Car is running bette, until i put my foot down and she feels like she is being starved of air, She kind of bogs down and the revs drop off rapidly.
As for the exhaust, i bent the muffler back down however it sounds like there is a crack or hole in the exhaust somewhere as her normal V8 note has changes significantly.
Looking under the car there doesn't seem to be much protection for the underbody particularly round the fragile looking steering. Has anyone installed under body protection?
Keep the advice coming you guys are great.

Hi
I would be thinking hard about changing my engine oil as well.

Could be a restriction in the exhaust system causing your power losses.
My old P38 went swimming as well, I wasn't as lucky as yourself. It was towed home! I got it running again, had to change all of the oils as water was in everything. Also had half of the Murray River in the exhaust, so once I started it up again it was like a hydro electric plant flowing from the pipe and my driveway was mighty washed-down afterwards!
My advice would be to change every oil on your Rangie (including diffs and tranny/transfer case), replace air filter and see how you go.
It's likely that if you have ingested water you may have a valve or two that didn't like the ride and may be bent/warped/not seating properly.
If the damage is too much it may be a case for the insurance company to handle.

Thanks for the advice
I have packed the car on a tow truck to get repaired.
For the first time in my life I am claiming on my insurance. Hope this does not take too long.
Anyone got any advice as to how insurance companies are for claiming off road damage?

As long as its a marked road (ie it has a road name), you can't go wrong. I told my insurance company (suncorp) exactly what happened and they were only too happy to oblige. Two days later I had my $$ and went shopping for another Rangie!

The wheel liner is the plastic liner that is clipped into the body above the wheels. Without the wheel liners in the P38's there's literally nothing to stop water getting in the air intake.
We have a mate who bent the chassis on his Delica on Fraser Is. It was on the Central Campgound Rd. Shannons covered it no problems, and bought his car back to Melbourne when it was done.
I'd "advise" the insurance company that the water was less than 50cm deep - this is the wading height LR state for the P38s.

I told the insurance company exactly what happened and they seem to be helping out. I was on a published "road" The assessor will view the car in the next couple of days to see what they will cover. I am not that bothered by the body work I just want an engine that works.
Fingers crossed:mad:

Don't let them know you are not "fussed" with the panel work though! Any damage to bodywork was from the "recovery".

Sorry to read of your woe`s. Out of interest where did you sink her? A few years back I tried to do the Holland Track in the winter, bad move as there was standing water everywhere. I had a couple of near misses where the bonnet dived underwater a couple of times driving through lakes but came straight up again. Half way across in the middle of nowhere we see a guy running towards us through the bush waving franticly for help. He had properly gone underwater in a Hyundai Ste Fe. We help out but decided not to go on as it was to dangerous. A week later he pitches up with wine and goodies for the ladies as a thank you. He got a full payout on the insurance. The Holland Track is a Road! I could not believe it.

Embarrassingly it was up on the Power Lines in Mundaring. Which is a published road.
Insurance company have not assessed it yet so I cant say what they are thinking. But the Pannel Beaters are recommending a write off due to water damage. They are basing that on the fact that the BCM may have got wet, The diffs don't have a breather kit so may be water in the diffs. The gear box, the engine would all need to be reconditioned. Plus the damage to the front bumper the fog lights the exhaust system and the rear bumper.
Unfortunately the car is only insured for $14,790 which is probably under valued for a 2000, 4.6 V8 with only 156K on the clock. I hope I can get my off road wheels and tyres back. That is more than $2000 there. Yet alone my awning and roof bars and roof cage.

P38's have diff and transfer case breathers from factory - albeit not comp spec, they sit higher than your average hilux breathers! As you say though, water gets in everywhere if you are in it long enough!
As for awning an roof bars, etc, you should have pulled them off before the tow truck came! My old P38 left on the tow truck with the amber indicators (i had converted it to clear indicators) and no spare wheel! I hope you can get the chance to get them off! You may be able to speak with the assessor once he/she has made the call and recover a few of those items.
Cheers

There's a 2001 (delivered 2002) HSE for sale on gumtree at the moment, 70,000k and never driven off road. I've not seen it but certainly reads well.

Insurance company is giving me $14K. I think that is a little low given low K's on my car. They have classed it as a statutory write off so not an option for me to buy back.
I was able to change out my wheels and tyres and grab my roof rack and awning stuff. I did leave the spare,
If you are in Perth and need a P38 for spares. check out the auctions you may be able to get a deal. I am fairly certain the engine would be easy to get working smoothly.
If you need any more details and an honest appraisal pm me.

sorry to hear you baby but you're lucky with the insurance, when i had my d2 written off (insured for market value) i only managed to get 11k for it, they tried at 9k but i got a bit more, this is despite not being able to replace the car for under 17k. at the time there was only 2 in oz for sale that matched what i had and the insurance came back with "market value is what a dealer can get an unregistered base model for". anyone with racq insurance be warned...
il be looking for a new insurance company when the p38 makes the road again, problem being quite a lot of mods (bought p38 for 5k and now owes me 40k), anyone that knows a decent insurance company in qld that does modded cars no problems pm me please.
sorry for the thread hijack and hope you find a suitable replacement.

Haven't you got the option of agreed value or market value when insuring your car? The agreed value might cost a couple of dollars more but is probably worth it.

I had agreed value on my old one, I ended up getting 14k from my insurance company when (in 2010) I wrote my 2000my 175,000km one off... When I initially insured it the agreed value was exactly what I paid for it, it dropped by $1k in the year and a half I owned it... Not very "agreed" really!
