View Full Version : Flashing Red Security Light

Hi Team. Noticed today while driving to work that the little red security light under the tachometer flashed a couple of times at random while passing through a town.
I had a look in the manual and searched here and could find nothing.
Same thing happened on the way home while driving through the same town.
The vehicle is a MY13 110.
Anybody had this happen?

I suspect your anti-theft/locking remote receiver is being interfered with by either a high-powered mobile phone tower...or doorway security system.
Some time ago, a particular chain of chemists used a brand that was notorious for this.
Or a fixed speed radar installation...

Hi Andy, could it be something as simple as a loose connection being wobbled by a dip in the road or something similar. If it doesn't occur elsewhere , try to see if it only happens at a particular location in that town. Cheers, 130man.

Mine does this (MY13) when I park in a shopping center multi storey carpark, every time. I also find that the Interior light flashes along with the red light if the doors are open. I too think it's interference. I wonder if disabling the immobilizer will stop this annoying feature.

My 2013 110 does the exact same thing at one set of traffic lights every time without fail! Must be interference from somewhere!

Did it again this morning on the way to work. Same town, not the same place but within 100m of where it did yesterday. The flash is very irregular.

Strange? Good to know it is not just me

I'm pretty sure there is a LR "fix" for this, someone posted it here a couple of months ago. Symptoms include interference from other remotes, electronic gizmos and particularly servo's when you park right in front of the auto door openers like I did and the immobiliser locks you out.

I'll be in Fish Creek on Saturday, I'll see if mine does the same, although mines 2011 model.

YES!

That happened to me last Thursday. I thought I was going crazy. It didnt lock the doors, it just immobilised the car. Things like this make me love Defenders.

Yep mine does it too. Only on the top level of the carpark at the large shopping centre in the middle of Cairns (Cairns Central). The first time it happened I thought I was going to end up stuck with a car that refused to start but it has been completely symptomless bar the flashing light. Does it every time I'm there though...

old "news" ?? =>

My TD4 wouldn´t lock the door via the remote control some time ago. Probably interference. I could manually lock it with the door look and fortunately the Defender still started. Made me look into possibilities to reduce the remote control´s sensitivity:
On the blacklandy.de - forum some guys reported about doing the very opposite by modifying the mount of a wire behind the dash. The TD5 is said to have it near the door striker arm left/hand side (colour grey-orange)(Reichweite der Fernbedienung mit geringstem Aufwand verbessern (http://www.blacklandy.eu/blboard/forum/showthread.php?31607-Reichweite-der-Fernbedienung-mit-geringstem-Aufwand-verbessern&highlight=reichweite)), the TD4 may have it in the middle of the dash just below the windscreen (pics: Weisses Kabel hinter Amaturenbrett aus Kabelbaum OHNE Anschluss | Landrover Defender – ein Traum wird wahr (http://www.world-of-nanook.de/?page_id=935) ). These wires are a "blind" ending wire with the insulation removed the the very end. It is kept in contact to the bulkhead with tape (TD5 I think) or a proper clip (TD4 I think).

People there were after increasing the distance from which on the car responded to the key fob. To increase the sensitivity the wire can be insulated. "As is" the wire just has slight contact to the vehicles ground. To reduce the sensitivity one has to make a good connection to ground.

I wondered if doing the latter could help with my intereference problem or what you just discussed. But I haven´t come around to try.

If one wants to lock/unlock the car from a greater distance you probably know that old trick (to me it was rather new) they mentioned in the german forum:

Exactly where? I will park my MY99TD5Extreme there and see if it does it.
