Presently in Kunnanurra, with kaput tranny. 2 weeks into a 2 month trip. Fortunately only 100 K from town not the Tanami, Bungles or Mitchell Plateau (which was to be next). Almost convinced myself that I should rebuild before the trip, but it was behaving perfectly, so serviced it, the oil and filter were perfectly clean and mech advised would be fine ! Looks like total care will recover, so I am looking for the best place, preferably Melb, to get rebuilt to the best possible standard available.
Not looking for sympathy guys, you need to be tough to own these vehicles, just good advice.
Thanks in advance
Peter

Bugger!,I can point you in the right direction, mine went kapoot 12 months ago, ray from Canberra motor works did the work, but he sent it off for the rebuild to a company in Melbourne and was adamant that they were the best in Australia for rebuilding these boxes, ray specializes in land rover/rangerover so knows his stuff. He's number is 02 62418777, hope this helps.

Bugger. In Melbourne, I could recommend Chris from Airport Automatics. He knows these trannies very well from rebuilding heaps of them from Commodores. There is also a place out in the Eastern burbs that I can't remember the name of that Romsey Land Rover use all the time. Try ringing Dan - he'll be able to tell you off the top of his head.

Peter G: I had my transmission done at A & B Automotive Re-manufacturing P/L at 12-14 Cahill Street in Dandenong South.
Phone: 03 9768 3755.
I am a diesel mechanic by trade and cannot speak highly enough of the people and equipment at this facility.
I would be most surprised if this was not the shop that the transmission from Canberra went to.
Feel free to send PM if you want to hook up via a phone to discuss further.

That he does. He only reason I didn't mention Rhys was that I was trying to think of Melbourne based companies, but it doesn't cost much to freight a trannie to and from Sydney.:)

Thanks guys, A & B was the place I had in mind, it is good to get the confirmation. The interesting thing now will be to see how much it can be improved in the rebuild process.

A&B did the auto in my D2 TD5, can't recommend them high enough :D
When I had mine exchanged I asked about a H/D torque converter, and they did a price I jumped at; It changed they whole dynamics of the car, better smoother changes and a slight decrease in fuel consumption as it was changing lower in the revs and holding on better in each gear. If they can do one for a reasonable price it would be a great improvement all round.
