Hi guys I have a defender 90 with 30k on the clock the other day went for a bit of an adventure and as soon as it hit the sweet gravel roads the 90 made a clunk and then a whining noise, shifted it from low range to high range etc the 90 would not move engine would rev and u could put it in any gear all u could hear is a whining noise... It was like the transfer case was in neutral ... Now the 90 is back at land rover all they said was the clutch had blown... They couldn't give anymore details .... Has anyone had something like this happen and know what exactly was the fault...
Cheers

this WHINING NOISE, could it be a spline slipping/ screeching sound? i have seen a puma strip the spud shaft from the trans to the transfer case internal splines clean out, made a kind of whining screech....

Mine got a new clutch two days ago,it was dropped in for a regular service and LR decided the clutch was too jerky and replaced it without an issue,it doesn't seem any different from a week ago but if they say it's not good enough I'm not going to argue. Pat

Pat,
Your's is obviously still in warranty for them to do that? One of the Perth dealers?

Ive got a 2011 2.4 and have just had the clutch replaced at 20000km as well as speedo O ring and gearbox output flange springs and transfer adaptor thingy.
Mine started with a bit whine, rattle and very odd pedal feel, would also clunk going into first at standstill.
So the defender is 18 months old and had:
1. hand brake drum replaced
2. brakes fail- new master brake cylinder
3. clutch etc
I am very patient but its wearing thin!!!
I was really alerted to the gearbox transfer case issue by excessive backlash,
more than my 96 Tdi with 230000 on the clock.
cheers

its funny you read reports like this and then you go to the dealer (there are only 2 in WA, both barbagellos) and they always sound surprised that you are coming in with a warranty issue.
A fault? With a defender? Surely not...
I dont believe em, reckon every defender mustve been back for warranty issues many times in the first 3 years. They must hate defenders in there. Mine is about to go in for the fourth time to try and cure a creaking clutch pedal. Not a 'failure' per se but irritating to live with and to fix, requiring parts that are not kept in Australia.
Other fixes ive had so far are the aircon sensor and a loose drive flange. Sounds from my other post that I have fuel filler breather issues too. I'd love someone else to drive mine and tell me if my drivetrain slack/noise is normal/ acceptable too.
I love my deefer, but i'll definitely be paying to take it to an independant specialist (if there is one in WA??) to go over the car for a pre-end-of-warranty check

Had a similar thing happen a few weeks back we were on the beach at Hut River looking for a camp site rather late. finally pulled up still in low range the next morning when I shifted out of low range to high we had the exact same thing you mentioned above. Just a whirring noise I changed back and forth from high to low and while slowly rolling forward it went back into gear properly and we drove off. I hasn't done this again and have used low range quite a bit from Exmouth to Coral. The lever position was correct but it didn't engage.

Driveline backlash..... Southern have said mine is rather bad and they will replace the thrust washers in the transfer case.

Hi Sam,
Lifestyle4WD in Moreley would be my first port of call. I've not personally been yet (car just went out of warranty in April), but Dave (MADDOG) across the road from me has them looking after his car (silver Defender 110) and he has nothing but good things to say about them.

No problem, although I make no claim to be a specialist!:D I suppose it would at least be a comparison to mine...

Touch wood...
No, not a single issue with my car other than a dodgy relay on the immobiliser.
They (Southern) replaced on their own accord the output shaft seal (or something like that) as well as the rear window/ stop light issue that was unique to the batch my vehicle was in.
I had a bit of a squeak on my clutch pedal, but a quick spray of white grease made that go away... your's doesn't sound that simple if they're talking ordering parts...
Cheers,
Lou

There's a service bulletin about the clutch pedal. They replaced the spring and the pivot bushes and it still sounds like an old wooden door opening. I can feel it grating too.
I think they should just replace my car with a 2013 model in tangiers orange, fully optioned, for free :)

Any more information about the service bulletin, or what is causing the noise? I have a TD5, and have replaced the spring and pivot bushes, and it still sounds like that wooden door... and I can definitely feel it grating as well.
My next guess would be the piston jagging (?) on the side of the cylinder, but I would have thought that that would only happen once the seals were well and truly stuffed, and I would get fluid loss as an additional symptom...
'Tis a mystery to me. I planning on disassembling the clutch housing/mechanism to find it, as it's VERY annoying...

After a quick look in the workshop manual this afternoon, tonight I popped off the top cover to the clutch master cylinder assembly - it was much easier to get to that I thought. A liberal dousing of WD40 for the time being, and it's removed the grinding/crunching/creaking from the clutch action.
Daylight will see a closer look. Next step might be to open it up a bit more, clean it all up, and apply some grease to the moving parts.

Forget WD40,give it Lanotec and all will be fixed. Pat

Or a decent drip of ep80w90 from an oil can down onto the pivot shaft. It'll soon make its way to the bushings. Have been doing this since I started working on the early Defenders, I can't believe they think it is any more complicated than a drop of oil??? The Puma clutch pedal assembly is essentially unchanged since late series LR!!!!

Mine has been lubed three times plus spring/ pivot bushings changed.
LR has just ordered in an entire clutch pedal assembly for me

Graphite powder.... Pull the pin out half way, do one side, then drive it back through and do the other. One of the few things that works with nylon bushes.. Worked with mine. (99 Defer Td5)

Gave it some Lanotec on Sunday (had it on the list to purchase anyway), and put some in there.
Drive of 30-odd kilometers yesterday was an absolute delight...
