View Full Version : Max tyre size to fit in spare wheel well?

I've been a proud owner of a 2000 HSE for a few weeks now so am looking for a spare set of wheels to fit some muddies - the only question is what size tyres. I've read through a stack of threads about tyre size but something I haven't found is how big can you go and still fit the spare in the wheel well?

Should I just forget about trying to get the spare to fit and work out a way to mount it in the rear? This would only be for excursions in the bush as I'll be running the standard HTs for road duties.

I think someone ran 255/70/16 and managed to fit in with minor mods, but a fully deflated tyre.

My mud terrains are 265/75/16 so have no chance I'm pretty sure.

Thanks. Having the spare deflated wouldn't be a drama.

Hopefully whoever it was that managed to fit with minor mods will reply and confirm.. It was only the foamy plastic stuff that needed modifying.

Might have been KeithyP38, whom runs that tyre size, but my memory could be wrong.

I managed to squeeze in a 265 70 16 AT. The tyre was half warn, deflated and I put a ratchet strap around it to squeeze it a bit before it would go in. No chance with my 265 75 16`s

Standard sizes only when inflated, ie 255/55/18 or 255/65/16 any bigger you will need to deflate and carry a compressor. As for the 265/75/16 muddies no chance whatsoever.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at 255/70/16. Good idea with the ratchet strap.

It was me! I run 255/70/16 bfg km2's and when brand new had to leave the valve out and muck around to get it to fit (with no jack tools or polystyrene in).

Now with about 30,000km on them I just need to deflate them to make them fit. Still run without the polystyrene thingy, put my jack and spares in a towel in there.

Cheers
Keithy
