Have seen these pods from UK to fit a Defender 110 crew cab ute. I wonder who'd make some up here in Oz?
I like the swing away wheel carrier (it's a Kaymar which is out of my price range... have to get one made up myself).

Hey Dinosaur,
I really like those pods; they do one for the 130 HCPU which have lower doors on the sides. I'd really like one! I wonder if there'd be enough interest to bother trying to organize a group buy/ship over?

We are meeting with 2 companies who make these later this year in the UK.
I have it on the big list of things to do, to get pricing for manufacturing here, however these are made in the UK, by vehicle coach builders, and as such are very bespoke and expensive.
Trek overlands 130 rear canopy converts to $6600 for the base unit.
110 is around $4000/5000
Nene's is similar in price
Excluding shipping.
We can facilitate orders and shipping for October delivery.

Juddy, you say $6 600 for a 130? Is that with the lower doors that cut into the sides of the tub? I got a quote for a full alloy canopy for my 130 and was quoted $5500 - $6000 - without cutting into the tub. So I don't necessarily think if your price as unreasonable. The only issues I can think of relate to fitting: allowing for defender build tolerances and still maintaining watertightness, and also modifying my tub to suit...

1. to get pricing for manufacturing here, there's no need to reinvent the wheel here. If these can be made here is Austalia at a reasonable price the I'd be very interested. It can't be that difficult to draw up some designs. I kind of like the gull wing like sides. That must be standard fare, with central space in the middle with a nice lift up door at the rear, Maybe split drawers-shelves in the middle section. Oh and we need a cheaper version of a wheel carrier than the exhorbidant cost of teh kaymar units. (Son made a wheel carrier for his 110 wagon for less than 100$ for materials..)
2. We can facilitate orders and shipping for October delivery. What do you mean by this?

The one that cuts into the rear body costs $7500 this is for the standard unit, however it does not include the body, you need to supply yours.
And nene are very funny about using old used tubs. Oh and then you have shipping at $2500 for lcl. That's why when you can you share container space we have to rear body's coming over in our container later this year.
The one that sits on the top like a custom box cost between 5/6000 depending on options.
As for fitting trek overland guarantees a perfect fit with no leaks if they fit it.
The nene cut down unit, is not just a simple box, it's fully engineered and safety tested.
We can facilitate orders means just that, if you want one, get your money out and we can put one in our container, and you can save on shipping.
As for reinventing the wheel, can't agree more, just seems no one wants to charge a fair price here, and with uk shipping etc its cheaper to source from the uk. Or so it seems so far.

So really, at almost $10k by the time I get it here; before I even think about fitting, I'm better off finding someone local. They do look nice though...

I made this not long after I bought my car. Its a "rough copy" of how I would like it, and thus will build another before the Xmas break, some time in spring at this point. Although the frames not in alloy, and it has a steel sheet roof, its not that heavy and is quite functional. Modifications will include proper sealed lockable doors and a shelf.
I could not justify the $2000+ they wanted here for just a shell, and to have an imported one was just not on, so I did it myself.
If you've got a mate who's handy with a welder, you'll knock one up yourself for well under a grand, and for that you should be able to fully fit it out with lights/legs etc I would think.
If I had a bit more time myself, I'd be tempted to do some,, mind you, I'm still thinking ;)

I think anyone whos got the time, and skills could make something up that suits, but its never going to be on the lines of a bought one. However cost vs doing it yourself would appeal to alot of people.
These things cost what they do as they are bespoke its as simple as that, and I don't think the average person could achieve a finish like the bought ones have, neither, a man in his shed with a welder, and a hammer vs a specialist body builder, don't think so.
And at the end of the day I cant see many people lining up with 10k to spend on these things, so a cheaper version mad in someones shed may be a better way to go.

its not rocket science, just find your local truck body builders, the kind that do all the sheet metal work for commercial trucks, trailer bodies etc. You should be able to get something pretty nice made up in Aluminium.

Chops, my 130 already sits on the wrong side of 2.5T. For this reason alone, it's gota be alloy. Weighing up the costs it might be cheaper to learn to weld aluminium though. Or find someone who does and will work cheaply for alcohol. :)
On a completely separate note: are the tyres on your rig in that pic 285/75R16's?? Old man just bought a wagon that needs new tyres and trying to work out which way to head

Uninformed: no one said it was difficult. Just that no one likes the price.

yes I got the price for importing a UK made one was high, but that is to be expected. Has anyone gone to sheet metal workes, truck body builders etc locally here and had it priced?
I had a top built for my 8x5 dual axle trailer, my design, 4 doors, 2 gas struts per door, good T handle insert locks etc for $2500.
Its funny how some people, dont have the time or skillset to do something, but can immediatly put a price on it, and want it to be high quality.

Uninformed: If the dollar value is X then the dollar value is X. And I will pay X dollars if I want it. Doesn't mean I have to like the price. In the same way people might not like the price of a new car or television.

I got one similar but not the same (sides lean in) And it's on a 130 tray, not a tub. Three lift up doors, aluminium $3000.00, but that was a few years ago now. Give these blokes a ring and find out.

Great price. There was a mob at the Brisbane 4wd show, who made tis type of unit $4550 they wanted for it, exactly the same as in the pictures here, other than in white, made of steel, it did not include any extras.
This type of product is fantastic for those who have tray body.
Not really suited for the HCPU, this why the nene one that cuts into the body is a great idea, and better suited for slide out fridges, and loading.

ok, so you are basicly saying you understand material cost, labour cost, cost of over heads etc, but still not happy....gees Id hate to have to put a smile on your face :D
Seriously though, it can come down to the leg work. It took me more time to find the right fabricator than it did to design my top and get it built. From min to max the prices doubled! :o
