I have a Series 2A petrol that hasn't been started in about 18 months I think. Could I just check fluid levels and give it a spin with a fresh battery - I should I be doing something extra?

I think you should check all engine fluids and maybe the gearbox oil as well cause when I first started my IIA after no clue how many years it sat there before i bought it, the gearbox was empty and it wrecked the bearings and the input shaft. Maybe a bit of fresh fuel as well just to give it a good chance of starting.

disconnect the coil feed, pull the spark plugs then turn it over by hand a dozen times first then wind it on the starter (this just makes sure that its not going to hydraulic on you and that) till the oil pressure light goes out put the plugs back, put the coil lead back and then fire it up.(this makes sure its got oil pressure and also gives the fuel pump a chance to prime by allowing higher cranking RPMS with less drain on the battery)
other than that all the usual prestart checks apply (oil fuel water)
