2A Nails in the Firewall?!

Hi,
here is a pic of the passenger side of my 2A's firewall. Ute body, factory 6 cyl with Holden conversion.
Looks like 2 nails between the hinges - driver's side is the same. Not sure why they are there, I always thought it was a dodgy repair.
I have seen a few pics of series LRs with similar things - does anyone know what they are for? They don't seem to be mentioned in the manuals I have (but I don't have a factory workshop manual).

my guess is it had a sidebar on and that is to cover the holes up after they have taken it off

The problem with side bars back from a bull-bar is that if you are unfortunate enough to hit a decent sized animal or run off the road into something solid those type of bars can badly damage the firewall.

If the bolts shear then the pipes or bars can go through the door skin and into the seat box. You don't want your leg in the way! Then you have the difficulty of opening the door when it is pinned or skewered.

You can see the damage on this firewall. Far better to angle the side bars downwards after the front wheels to brackets off the firewall mounting bolts.

Attaching to side steps/sliders as well is the best way.
