Romour has it AJ is sitting on 3 101s.
My information has it as follows
1x 24volt V8 fitted with a hard top and a triple jerry can holder.
1x 12 volt soft top fitted with a TDI 300 diesel and 5 speed with new tyres
1x V8 soft top 12 volt.
All are RHD and I have been told you could own one for 14K while they last
Ron
PS
I noticed AJ has been advertising Sankey trailers which were standard behind a 101 in the UK

Anyway, it you're waiting for the price to drop, they'll sell before that happens.

Not the case at all. You just haven't been listening to what has been discussed openly all over the place.
I have known about these 101's since about some time late last year. AJ mentioned he had three in the UK when I bought some parts from him. I have told many people about them. I think I have mentioned them in a few posts on this forum.
You want a 101, give AJ a call. He has a list of people wanting a 101 longer than your arm. A lot of those people are not on AULRO.
There is a very healthy market for 101's outside AULRO.

You sometimes need to have the contacts for these sorts of things.
As for the avaiabilty of 101s its abit like waiting for a bus:) none turn up then theres 4.
And having contacts on the ground overseas is a big help so you dont buy a pile of junk, the 101 we have coming over is a 9/10 example and was very well looked after. If it was to be re sold here it would be around the 20k+ mark.

There are lots for sale in the UK at the moment, one or two for sale in the US and a few for sale in Europe. If you are genuinely interested I can point you in their direction. Bear in mind the US ones are around US$20,000 and the UK ones from £5,000 to £8,000 from memory. Also, some of the vendors are a bit anal about their national treasures leaving their shores so contacts are a great advantage.

Yup, the former Piper 7 Recovery.
Running a breathed on Efi 3.9 (we reckon 230-240bhp) and in the video loaded to the gunwales with rally recovery gear, a massive crane and a few other bits.
There were events where it was clocked faster down stages than competing cars.
It looked like this when it was fully kitted out.

Never come across Falcon, the main ones round here are Atlas, Piper, Galloway and Viper. I know a few of the guys who run them, the rest you kinda pick up with Facebook groups etc.
I had heard of another 101 doing rally recovery down south somewhere, that's as far as my knowledge went.

As the thread states..... Who's looking for a 101 Land Rover? I had a friend (who owns a hardtop 101) txt me today.. The txt went along the lines of "Hi Si. Not going to continue with the 101. I've decided to sell it with the brakes working but needing attention. If you want to put it on the forum, Im going to ask $20000 for it. Some might think that's too much someone might really want it. It will come with 3 months SA rego"......
Make of that what you will. I will be getting all the details over the next few days, and will post an advert in the 'vehicles for sale' section, but in the mean time, here's what I know. Its a V8 on carbs, with original gearbox and axles. It has a home made hard top which has a swing away wheel carrier on the rear. It used to be a GS. Its RHD and is registered in SA so is easily transferred. It has Bar Grips all round. The hard top has twin side doors on the left hand side and is set up as a basic camper/competition radio vehicle inside. It has a generator on the engine to run radios. (Note, it is not a genuine Radio Body). Will let u all know more when I do!!

The front bumper has been modified to take a winch, but I have a complete original here which will be thrown in too.. After buying one of my 101s, a fellow told me he remembered seeing it in a workshop being converted to a bus. He remembered there were at least two. The white one shown above may have been one of them.
Here is mine:

Thanks Mick,
I said I'd _almost_ convinced SWMBO :-)
In all seriousness, we know we're going to need something in the way of a 4wd truck for our place - the utes doing well, but some loads are going to be a little too much for it, and a rear drive truck wont cope. Another option might be a perentie 6x6, but I've always wanted a 101.
One of the principle hurdles is it has to be something that the other half feels comfortable driving - doesn't have to love it, but at least needs to be able to drive it. She drove my old 300tdi defer happily. Will drive the isuzu ute. Drives the disco3 happily. Doesn't like the series 3 at all as she doesn't like the gearbox, or anything else about driving it. Happy driving the tractor. She's a good driver in terms of performance stuff (was a mech eng and used to do a lot of testing for ford), but less so in terms of mechanical empathy for older/quirky vehicles. So, anything needs to be test driven by her first to see if its something she can adjust to - which means I then feel bad as I'm test driving something that I may end up not buying due to something that isn't a fault in the vehicle, which I feel isn't fair on the seller.
The one that came up in the for sale section came up a little too early if anything, theres a few vehicles here to be sold, and I'm still waiting on council to approve the extension to the shed to I can get the various vehicles under cover. But - the price was certainly fair, and not out of reach at all.
And that was a very long answer to a very simple question [biggrin]
cheers

Well how is the missus going to handle climbing up into the 101 and then handle the heavy steering - Ok on the highway but everywhere else - armstrong steering is required.
From what you have just said, while you might want a 101, it will not be suitable for your missus to be comfortable with.

Might I suggest you'd be better off looking for something like a Hino or similar. A mate picked up one at auction recently for about 10k. All he had to do was pay the rego transfer fee.

Umm... as someone who used to rock climb, and a (now retired) competitive kayaker, those are probably the two aspects she'd have the least problem with. [smilebigeye]

A women will hate driving a 101 especially if she hates driving a series Landrover.
Getting in and out of one is a really big issue. .....especially for a women because there is no swarve way of doing it.
Steering is a very big problem for a women........take it from long term owners.
A rock climbing history will not help.
The 101 was a strictly military vehicle with no intentions for civilian use and was intended for 17 to 25 year olds to drive them in miltitary service as a gun tractor with big loads.
The series landrovers were made with civilian use in mind.....not the 101.

That was then - this is now.
The 101 is a real pain in the arse when you have to manoeuvre back and forth - wheel lock to wheel lock - my shoulders feel it. As I said from your description above I doubt a 101 is suitable for your missus to use - ok when cruising the highway but not close quarters stuff.
Your choice of course.

A TDI does not have enough power for a 101 - certainly not enough to justify the cost of conversion.
Homestar
8th April 2018, 07:32 AM
Te best diesel conversions I've seen in a 101 are a 6B Cummins (went like a rocket and did 14's all day everyday with fuel economy and a TD5, but the owner of that one - a Mechanic - said it was a nightmare conversion to do and wouldn't consider it again.
If my V8 ever craps itself, I'll be thinking of a 4BD1T conversion and 5 speed - Ray from Roamerdrive is developing a kit to mate a strong, cheap readily available (in the USA) 5 speed to this engine and an adaptor to bolt an LT230 to the back of it. He's prototyping this conversion in a 101 as his current project.

Hi all,
not sure of the details but I thought KLR in Sth Windsor were developing a 5 speed to work properly behind the 4BDIT --guess it is the massive torque that causes issues so does anyone know anything about their progress on this as I may want a 5 speed to do this soon?
Previously I had a Mazda T3500 in my red 101 camper and I felt it went very well, used to do 16ltr/100 and it has a Samurai (UK) conversion--but realise it is now considered an old style motor, we had the standard RR4 speed behind it. Agree, don't bother with a tdi as they struggle even in heavy 130's. Alan

What makes you say that - yes I saw the UK bridge plate but I thought the vehicle had a UK feel about it - might have been the plate and the paint I am not sure - also the tyres (I think are Alliance) are not common at all here but common in Europe.
I thought it might have been one of the ones AJ brought in a few years back and had shipped to WA - I think Gary's (AKA Dodge) 101 from WA had one of these.
