any idea of what engine they will run?
They will be running a Yamaha designed 4.4L V8 the capacity of which will be increased to 5L....the word is that development of this engine started late last year.

am I correct in saying that:
holden = chev based engine
Ford = Ford based engine
Nissan = Nissan based engine
Merc = Merc based engine
Volvo = Yamaha based engine
:confused:

Yes, that's pretty right, but I should say that the "Volvo" engine has been used in a production Volvo.....it's just that Yamaha originally designed the engine for Volvo for their use.
The next 6 months are going to be very "interesting"...Driver changes, "Evolution" of the new car, Gear Box "issues"....all sorts of stuff going on.

This is a very complex looking casting. Yamaha are good at that kind of thing.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_B8444S_engine and that's the v8 I believe they are using, after some mods.
No current Volvo uses it though I believe.

Bah.
One day Nissan will get too competitive and they'll change the rules again....
Oh wait, they won't because there won't be any Fords and probably Holdens...
Which begs the question what IS the future of V8 Supercars once Ford closes down (no more Falcon) and Holden stops (inevitably) building Commodores....
Vic Bitter sales are going to plummet.

Id say, and this is a huge guess, that its like NASCAR and one of the reasons they made the change to a control type chassis and full silhouette body. In America the cars they race aren't anything but a figment of a production cars imagination. This new V8 format allows them to sell imported front wheel drive family cars that will replace the Falcon and Commodore yet still race a representation

There is some truth in what you say. There has to be, because it would be impossible to have any form of "parity" with any of the cars, even Ford & Holden, as they are made on the production line.
Look, I love my motor-racing, particularly V8s, & whilst people "rubbish" Nascar, it can be quite OK, if you take an interest in it...as I have sinse Marcos Ambrose went over there. The speeds are awesome....I mean the top speed we see at Bathurst is around 290/295 down ConRod...for a second or so per lap.....Nascar drivers are bumping/touching/pushing at 300+ks for lap after lap.....damn sure I wouldn't wanna be in the car!
Mention has been made of the Nissan engine....I believe it'll be a while before that engine is competitive.
There has, I believe, been a submission put to V8 Supercars, to allow 2 door cars to race. I believe this will eventually be approved, & so will allow the Mustang to race when it is sold RHD here in 2016, which may also enable Ford to continue in the competition.
Cheers, Pickles.

i also am enjoying this season with the mercs and nissans, next year will be better again with the volvo's.
bmw came out yesterday saying they would not join the series because the engine rules would mean then use something quite antiquated compared to thier current stock of motors. so i think the next rule change will be making the engine limits more in line with what the companies have already.
next year for me will be good to see the nissan gtr at the bathurst 12hr, looking forward to that. :cool:

Absolutely...It will certainly give the Erebus SLS something to think about....this race is getting better & better every year....I reckon the Circuit helps.....just a little bit?!

I believe V8 Supercars were aiming at 5 manufacturers, which they now have. Nice as it might be to have BM throw it's hat in the ring, I don't think V8 S/Cs
are going to provide any huge incentives for it (BMW) to do so.

Based on the S60 model I believe with 4.4 motor modded to 5 Lt and RWD.

Ah yes but merc said similar things, albeit it is Erebus running that team.
I still thing Toyota will join the series soon, not much different to the NASCAR program for them and good exposure. :)

based on what? It will have the control chassis that they all run, it will have the same transaxle gearbox as the rest. It will be RWD like the rest. :D
I like that they atleast use a engine based on their own brand in this class. It is still only badge racing though. That is not a bad thing either

I often wonder whether the obsession with parity has made the racing less interesting. The cars are just too similar.
Imagine this scenario:
One brand of car has been allowed to have a better power to weight ratio, so will be faster out of the corners than the others.
Another brand will have better aerodynamics, so will be faster at the end of the straight.
Another will have a better chassis and suspension so will be faster around the corners.
Another will have better brakes, so will gain an advantage going into the corners.
As long as there were races at circuits that suited each brand, there would still be a form of overall parity.
Imagine how much overtaking there would be with such a scheme as different brands would be faster on different parts of each track. Imagine how many different winners there would be throughout the season.
No doubt some will say it wouldn't work or would be too difficult to administer, but isn't that what we had when Mini Coopers, Mustangs, Chargers and a few others used to do battle back in the good old days. :p

I know anything is possible with money, but what production cars, without being close or over $100k would be suitable to build a race car out of. Even then they would not be as good as a more purpose built car.
Also, isnt production class racing what you describe?

I wasn't thinking that the cars needed to be based on production vehicles. I am arguing that the racing has more uncertainty and more excitement when the cars are different. I don't care what they are base on.
Anyway, nothing beats the little Aussie Racing Cars for excitement. Can you name any other class of racing where cars can go around a corner four abreast and any one of them might be the one that comes out in front? :D

go karts :D bring back the shifter/super carts....back in the day, in Adelaide, they made F1 look a little silly :eek:

Gotta disagree there.
Nothing wrong with that category at all, but it simply does not have any of the attributes necessary to be a main event.
What we have, is what we have.....it will "evolve", just like all of our racing forms have......unless,......there ain't enough dollars in Aus to support this sort of thing, and that situation could be just around the corner?

yes, back when F1 was in Adelaide, they had superkarts run. The pole sitting supercart would have been 3rd or 4th row on the F1 grid. Compare that on a $ for $ basis and thats where I say a little silly.......
I think F1 is great. I think Can-am the best of track racing

yep, from what I can gather they where the fastest cars period, and this stuff went over to Lemans type racing as much as rules would allow....Porsche 917 being the pinacle and doing something like 411km/h down the Mulsane straight :eek:
some really free thinking which was great.

No argument there.
But, talking Lemans, I'd like to go back a bit further?....Always been a V8 man, so I LOVE "American Muscle", and that is why my favourite Lemans car is the Ford GT40 (The Ford That Beat Ferrari...twice!) Henry Ford wanted to buy Ferrari.....but he couldn't....so he spent "Sqillions" in building a car that beat them.
V8s are on this afternoon...I'll be watching....Go Jamie.
