Front propshaft greasing (hint)

HI Forumites,
I was servicing my 110 at the weekend, same old same old, front propshaft greasing the uni joints, when I had my RRC classic I had the same problem.
I tried all sorts of things, grinding the tip of the grease gun, trying to find a smaller one, and all sorts of gadgets and widgets from different shops all with limited success.
In the end I bought a 7mm socket 1/4 drive, a screw driver handle with a 1/4 drive on the end and an extended grease nipple about 25 mm long. What I do now is unscrew the installed grease nipple install the extended one, pump the grease in leave for five minutes and then replace the original grease nipple, works every time and takes about five minutes. No mess no hassle.

Thought this might be a bit of assistance for one of those pain in the butt jobs.

Too late for me this time as I've just done them by unbolting the front UJ. I'll try your method next time.

The only way to properly grease the front shafts in late Td5 and Puma defenders.

I've heard you should remove the prop when greasing to take the load of the UJ. Otherwise its difficult to get the grease to ooze around all the cups. But who can be bothered with that?!

I generally jack up a wheel so that the shaft rotates freely. Your flexible hose grease gun then can come in from any angle at which the nipple is easier to access. Sometimes you jack up the chassis a bit to increase tailshaft angles to get room around a difficult grease nipple. You don't really want to wear out the tailshaft nuts by undoing them each service.

This one came in the toolkit of a BSA Bantam my Dad owned.
It's a Tecalemit 715853.

A bit fiddly to fill up but great for tight spots like UJ's.
Because it doesn't latch onto the nipple there is a trick to getting it to seat, especially if it's on at a bit of an angle.

I have one of those but a little bigger and it works a treat

Never had a problem greasing the props with a normal grease gun, I just jack up one wheel (and with the use of an axle stand, as I know the H&S brigade are waiting to pounce!) just turn the prop until it goes on, seems to be a lot of problems finding nipples for some reason :p

The grease gun that came in the toolkit of my Austin A40 does the job on my front UJ with no problems. :)
