My bad luck whilst travelling continues. At a guess problems with the transfer case. Was driving normally on a dirt road, 10kms after using low range with CDL to drive up a forest trail. Suddenly no drive whatsoever, regardless of gear, range or CDL.
Anyway, I'm about 40km from Began. Any suggestions where to take it?

Is the transfer case in neutral??
Also - maybe the splines/spud shaft that join the gearbox and transfer case may have failed - was a design issue. You can take the large round plate at the back of the tfr case off to get access. Normally the spud goes first but the splines can also. If it is just the spud shaft this can be replaced through the rear of the transfer case (so I am told).

Not good Ranga. Maybe the input side of the transfer - input gear splines or gearbox output shaft.
Hope you get it sorted quickly/cheaply.

Hi Ranga, just saw your call for help.
Is that Bega NSW or Qld?
Is the gearbox mainshaft spinning inside the top gear of the transferbox?
A crude fix to get you back to help, is drill a hole into the crack between the gear and the shaft, then hammer a concrete nail into that hole, that should get you a few extra kilometre's.
Good luck mate, it's your turn now for a bit of assistance and I will do what I can to help.
It's a big wheel that doesn't turn once.

If it's achievable, where would I take it in Cooma?

Hi Ranga
To get the correct parts you need to count the teeth on that top gear.
Is your transfer still the original 1.410:1 high range ratio, if so you need a gear with 26 teeth?
But to get the correct pitch on your teeth, you must read the transfer box serial number taking particular note of the suffix.
This link is a good reference but does have some errors and bits of missing information.

These guys will look at in the morning, to at least try and diagnose it. Nice clean workshop, and now derogatory comments regarding LR, which is a good start.

Well, the mechanics had a look and they think the problem is the clutch (at least).
It turns out, that yet again it does pay to belong to RACQ. Being an Ultimate member has resulted in being put up in a nice motel tonight, bus/train to Sydney via Canberra, accommodation tomorrow night in Sydney, and car hire to Brisbane. Oh, and they're also transporting the Defender home to MR Auto! :D This means I get home by Sunday to fly out to Alice Springs on Monday for work, and the Defender is repaired locally.
The guys at Specialised Automotive in Bega were fantastic. A speedy prelim diagnosis, friendly attitude, LR friendly and familiar, and they even offered to let me keep my camper open to dry out, pack it up for me, and securely store until the car carrier arrives. Was happy to sling them a carton for their help.
Thanks as always to you guys here with helpful advice and support ;)

Hehe, I was actually en route to camping with Tank and VNX205 when it happened! They helped me move it off the road, and we managed a small meetup waiting for the tult-tray :)

Ranga, let us know if there's anything we can do, home now, got your note on the table, you were right, cold and wet, found a much shorter way out, took that Knox's Link Track off the road we drove in on, the one with the million speed humps.
This Knoxs Link track saved miles of ups and downs, will go in that way in future.
Anyway hope it's the clutch, lot cheaper than a Transfer box, good luck, Regards Frank.

Should find out soon - apparently the transport company picked it up earlier than expected, and will be dropping it off at MR auto tomorrow. Fingers crossed...

Went down to MR Auto today to get some things out of the cab. Was waiting in the office when I get a call... from MR Auto! The mechanic out the back was calling me to let me know the Defender was ready to pick up  Very surreal...
Anyway, it turns out the clutch was the problem, as you can see from the attached photos. Not a cheap fix, but much better than what it could have been!

I wonder what causes that sort of failure and I wonder how common it is.
I am assuming it has nothing to do with the fact that it is in a LR since most clutches seem to my untrained eye to be constructed in roughly the same way.

This happened in my partner's brand new 1993 NH Pajero. At that time never off the tar (two months old), experienced driver - just changed gear - no drive. Replaced under warranty immediately. The replacement clutch gave no problems so the first must have been a faulty pressing I suppose.

This one was slightly older - about 200,000km I believe ;)

I carry a spare plate under the seat in my Defender, they never looked heavy enough to me, given what work they are called to do at times.
Good to see your bus is on the mend though.

While they had it apart did they also replace the crappy pressed throw-out arm that sometimes fails? I am talking about the '90s here so it may not be what is in your model.

They replaced the clutch fork, if that's what you mean.

Depends where you are, 1973 I had two broken diffs in my 6 cyl 2A F/tray, 90 miles north of Kununurra, out of the two I made a rough one that got me back into town.
