Hi All,
my first post ...
I need new shock absorbers for my P38.
I don't do anything extreme in my Rangie so I just want some good ones without the need for the utmost performance or extension etc.
What do people recommend?
Can I buy them in Au?,
or Melbourne?
many thanks,
Paul.

Hi Paul and welcome.
I'd say in you situation to settle for the standard BOGE shockers. You can either buy them on eBay or from British Car Components in Port Melbourne at a reasonable price.

Thankyou,
do you mean British Car Components in "North" Melbourne
not port?
cheers,
Paul.

I've tried Bilstein's on my previous P38 and have Koni's on my current. prefer the Koni's. But they are considerably dearer than the OEM Boge one's. So the advice given already is sound.

Hi Dave :)
I think you may be the guy I bought my Arnott Gen III's off ? a few years back? lol.
IF I buy Bilstein's or Koni's where do I shop, ?
and btw does OEM mean the same as what comes on a stock rangie , ie the original?
( I realise it stands for original equip manu , but what does that actually mean :) ?)
Paul.

Hi,
I read in another thread here that people had good experience with Boss Shocks
Adjustable Shocks | Boss 12 way Adjustable Oil Filled (http://www.bossairsuspension.com.au/boss-shock-absorbers/)

The Boss adjustable's are good shocks, but an overkill for Paul if it only basic driving. The Boss adjustable a are a good combination with my 2" lift and Arnott Gen 111's though!

Sachs Boge are fantastic in the ride quality for low $$ outlay. There are better ones around for P38a but these are good quality and relatively cheap.

Agreed for standard setup the boges are good value for money and give comfortable ride. If you had spare coin then Konis would be my choice.
Have the Boss on mine but not impressed!
Thats my two bobs worth.

Hi I have Bilsteins on my 95 on coils and there fantastic Had Konis on last RR but Bilsteins have way out lasted them. I like things that last even if that comes at a price My 2 bobs save up for the good stuff and there also selling points

Hi Pauly, I just put new shocks on the front of mine last week.
Went for Boge, they are good all rounders and not too expensive, car feels great now.
Grahame from British Car Components got mine in overnight.
I also replaced my steering dampener with a genuine Land Rover one, what a difference that made!
Easy job to do, Undo top bolt in the engine bay first, 18mm socket required. I did mine with a ring spanner, but would be much faster with a socket.
Then brace the shock to stop it turning from underneath when you undo the bottom nut.
Cheers, Pete.

I have played around with a few different shocks on my P38's over the years and have some opinions ;)
I like the standard OEM Boge shocks for a stock P38. Best compromise for price and ride quality.
I like Bilsteins for a P38 that will be driven like a sports car on very smooth roads. They keep the car nice and flat though corners but you notice every bump on the road.
I like Offroad Boss shocks for the ability to adjust the dampening to suit my mood. Unfortunately they are no longer supplying the shocks that I used to recommend for use with the Hard Range lift kit.
I didn't like the early Terrafirma +2" shocks that I tried with the HRA lift kit. Too soft IMHO. I hear that the newer models are much better.
I didn't like the Tough Dog shocks I tried a few years ago. Can't remember the model, but way too soft for my liking.
Never tried Konis.
What am I running now? Removed the Bilsteins and have gone back to Boge shocks with Arnott Gen III air springs. Wife much happier.
Cheers, Paul.

if you want pure comfort go with pedders foam cell shocks. ive got them in mine and you never feel a single bump, these shocks have a really high bound and low rebound rate also so they act more like a damper rather than a shock. im also on coils tho with a 140kg front and 160kg rear spring rate so that probably makes it a little smoother also. only problem with the foam cells is make sure you come to an almost complete stop before turning any corner and might pay to get a boat license :p. end of the day it comes down to what you want the truck to do, if you want sport car handling on road and cloud softness off road then adjustable is the only way to go.

For what its worth, from the owner of a castrated P38 (that doesn't have any suspension issues by the way ;)) and who is using standard Boge P38 shock absorbers I second what Paul is saying above as the best choice for anyone that wants to retain the ride softness of the standard P38 suspension. While there is a lot to be said for the airbag suspension in the way of ride quality there is more to be said for the correct choice of shock absorbers if you want to maintain the ride quality. In my opinion the engineers that chose what are the standard Boge shock absorbers for the P38 got it pretty spot on...

I do currently have the Terrafirma shocks on mine, but am condemplating wether to change them for the britpart foam cell shocks which I have in the garage, and are still new. I do find the terrafirmas a bit hard, and don't really soak up The bumps as well as the foam cells do. Though Terrafirma are specifically made for Land Rovers.

Boge OEM`s are very good on my stock suspension.
I have Bilsteins in the front ATM, the ride is harsher than I would like but it does improve the handling.
If I want it to handle better I drop her down to highway mode.

I need new ones all round also... Have been in the UK for the past 4 weeks so am hoping to fill a small box with some "stuff" :p before we leave to come home... Several yrs ago when I replaced the air springs, the fronts came with Ford/LR markings and are sealed with a band at the top. There are supplied by Firestone and are the preferred LR fit for "hot climates". Thanks to the Russian website which has Microcat online, I discovered that the OEM damper specified for said Firestone air spring (REB00050) for vehicles after XA424236, is a different part number (RSC500010) from the original Boges to go with the std Dunlop bag. The revised shocks are difficult to find even in the UK... which I suppose is logical considering that today's temp is about the same as a cold winter day in Brisbane (18 degC) .
Range Rovers and Evoques seem very common around these parts... they are mostly black with the occasional white Evoque. I have seen only one D4! I glimpsed an " Overfinch" RR disappearing round the corner against the red light;) and another with the letters K A H A N across the tailgate instead of the usual livery...I had to 'Google' that one ... Bentleys seem plentiful, esp the 2 door fastback jobbies. Then out the window of the bus was the McLaren store...three examples on show...one on a turntable. There was an elderly woman selling the "Big Issue" a few metres away... Can't get over how "clean" the city is. I was last here 30 yrs ago for a two week visit to do with work... I even checked some old colour slides ... the Olympics certainly made a difference.
It's interesting to study the local real estate agents' windows: a 2000 sq ft (20 sq) abode with 4 br no parking, 3rd floor was a measly £7.5M. We are staying with daughter and son-in-law in their reasonably spacious (leased) 2 BR flat on the 3rd floor above a block of shops, 56 stairs, no lift. About £305 per week. Given they don't need a car and most days run to from work in "the city" (14 km return) it's probably a good deal. Beer is less expensive even allowing for exchange rate as is a decent size cup of coffee ($3). Groceries on the whole are probably 15-20% less expensive than our Woolies/Coles tab for a similar basket of stuff.
I digress...
It will be good to get home:angel:

My apologies for the irrelevant couple of paras in the previous post. A failed cutand paste included stuff meant for a separate email. Such is life using someone else's ' tablet' ...shouldn't take other people's tablets:eek:
