View Full Version : Flew interstate - defender not as described!

Went up to Victoria Yesterday, flying up at a cost of $129 x 2 (me and my mechanically inclined buddy) + fees, booking a cabin for 2 and a vehicle spot on the ferry back to tassie at $625 cost. A bit of a risk to take but I had to look at the vehicle some how! The seller crowed about how great it was and that it was in fantastic condition, so i took the risk...

Quote from the add:

"This defender has been an incredibly reliable and trustworthy vehicle while it has been serviced on time and looked after very well. No dents, rust or damage"

We got from the airport, took a $75 taxi 40 minutes out of the city to pick up the vehicle. When I got to the place I realized I had been duped!

It took us not 2 minutes, to find at least 13 spots with rust and not just "A little surface rust & dust" the seller was calling it - I put my finger through one in the bulkhead...

Ontop of that, the bushings were all dried and cracked, anything rubber on the vehicle had perished and cracked, the tyres, while having a lot of tread were cracked along the side walls and the interior was in very poor condition. This was all before we even turned on the ignition...

The car turned over but threw blue/black and brown smoke in fits and farts. This was after we located the kill switch for the battery. Which was on. That the owner didnt know how to operate...

We tried the ARB air lockers. Nope. No compressor, no relay - nothing. The whole system was completely dead or disconnected somewhere. The air lines under the car were cracked and wouldnt have worked even if it was connected.

The winch didn't function. Didnt matter cos the seller had lost the remote anyway...

We continued to find stuff wrong with this car like weeping joints, leaks, issues with the engine etc etc...

We jump in for a test drive, thouroughly convinced to run a mile but thought it would be better to get a laugh from the $1200 travel costs at least than to just start running.

Couldn't get it into gear but according to the seller it was just me and it was fine. I know the LT77 can be a pain, but when your foot is ON the floor and the gears still crunch theres something more at play. Finally with the sellers instruction to "just lean on it" we got it into reverse and out onto the street.

Certainly was fun. The clutch was completely shagged, various lights didnt work. heater didnt work, AC didnt work. We got back and gave him the list of screwed items to which he replied

"The AC WAS working!" as if we had done something to it... He swore black and blue that the clutch was fine.

Eventually I asked for my meager deposit back that I paid for him to hold onto the car until I got there which he did thankfully.

I gave him some friendly advise that if he genuinely wanted to sell the vehicle he would need to get, at the very least, the clutch looked at to which he replied that he had a quote from the mechanic already.... :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored::censored::censored::censored: and we left.

Turns out the photos were 4 years old - Tassie rego plates with a VIC plate number on the add... seller said it was because he didnt have it reregistered until recently! Should have been a giant red flag...

I felt horrible for the defender. It looks like someone had taken ages to setup and it has since been left to rust and die in suburban Melbourne for 4 years. Not a suitable end for such a vehicle...

In the end, I took a $150 taxi from old mates place across the city and wound up finding a 95 300tdi 110 for a 'suitable' price in great aesthetic condition. It has some mechanical issues to sort out but nothing in the league of the previous piece of :censored:!

Many beers were had on the ferry.

Hi Phibbzy.

It's a pity that we can't name and shame that person, but did you get a photo of the Defender, as that may save someone else from making a big mistake ?
.

Add info: Thanks Psimpson7

I feel your pain. Living in Adelaide, you have to travel to see 'interesting' cars and have had the same thing, where one person's "Immaculate" is another persons "trashed".....

If I had to travel interstate to have a look at a vehicle I would have paid someone, either RACV or even one of our members here to go and have a good look before you decided anything.

That way you would have received a true report on the vehicle.

One of life's little experiences, in hindsight. I hope the beers were good

What would you expect for a 20yo car?
(Where is that sarcastic font?)
Sorry to hear of your troubles. There are a few AULROians in the Werribee area who would have given it a quick glance over for you. I'd have picked you up from the airport and driven you over there. The Merc needs a good run.
It's a very nice looking Defender (back when the photo's were taken).
Unfortunately, there are many people out there who look at their cars through rose coloured glasses. They tend to overlook the faults when they want to sell. A lot don't have a realistic idea of price. Mind you, a lot of buyers can be unrealistic too.

Shocking - I found one for a little under $100,000 USD for you. Travel costs might be a little more than the Melbourne trip though

I don't know which suburb the Defeer was located in but I am sure one of us on the forum could have been close enough to look at it and send some true photos of it too you before you outlaid any cash or booked tickets to travel.
I have done this for a person before with a motorcycle.

Werribee is not in my normal area of work as a Sales Rep, but I have checked out vehicles where not inconvenient for members. Happy to do so because there is no reason for the seller to BS and I enjoy looking at Land Rovers :)

At least you didn't buy it sight unseen just from the description. Would have been more than $1200 lost.

By the sounds of it, you'd have to spend a few years trashing it before you can ask that sort of money.

They have no control over their current owners.

I also travelled from NSW to Tas to buy a defender that didn't match the description, but unlike this horror story mine was only cosmetic.
I payed the local mechanic to check it over and he said it was perfect, didn't have one scratch. he failed to mention the crushed bonnet and the bent roof rack. I guess he was a little too local.
Good suggestion, RACV or member would be a good idea.

I had actually called RACV to organise an inspection but their current wait time is 3 weeks+ in that area, figured it was worth the risk and to me, the risk was worth it as luckily I had a few fall back plans and it was a fun little adventure to have. 5pm Hoddle Street and Melbourne CBD is great fun when you're bigger than everyone else and fully insured :D

Although after calling around a few of the dealerships (not LR dealerships, just general ones) I get the idea that being a **** in Melbourne is kind of par for the course...

My thoughts too. Always a good thing to be able to use the resources at hand to potentially help you out.

Not so long ago I purchase a vehicle interstate and it sounds like I had much better luck than you did. Sorry to hear. It sounds like a nightmare!

In retrospect I agree with all the comments, you should have got someone to take a look, however I admit I didn't do that either. I conceded that worst case it would be an adventure and we would return home empty handed. I'm not sure I will do it again though. There is just too much risk and too easy to convince yourself it will be fine. Hopefully others can learn and not do the same as what we did!

Sounds like things somewhat worked out OK in the end, so that's good to hear. :)
