I am completely new to radio communication, but my Defender has a UHF radio fitted,so thought it would be a good idea to have some communication with it when away from the vehicle.Bought a Wouxun KG-UVD1P on advice from the forum, but am stuck on step one of its operation. It starts up in frequency mode, press Menu +TDR screen says Step 12.5K and a voice says Function F Lock.Seems to be stuck on channels 1&2.How do I progress from here?

Have you loaded up the frequency map posted by someone here? It gives you all the usual 40 UHF channels for Australia (not sure if anyone has updated it to 80Ch)

Its been a year or so since I did mine so I don't recall the exact details, but there are frequency files uploaded in this thread : http://www.aulro.com/afvb/communications-car-audio-electronics/131050-wouxun-frequency-file.html
Read the whole thread as there may have been some adjustments to the file on the way through.
Also a useful hint I posted in this thread on connection issues with USB and Windows7 http://www.aulro.com/afvb/communications-car-audio-electronics/130263-hand-held-uhf-wouxun.html

Steve,I had a look at the thread and downloaded the vista driver,it looked as if it was using port 14 whereas the installer shows port 1....no idea how to change ports on the installer, cannot change from port 1.Device manager is now not showing any Prolific Driver?

Been ages since I did it so I can't recall how to set the port.
I do recall that it wasn't able to be set to the high port number that was automatically assigned, so I had to do do the USB port number reset I mentioned here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/communications-car-audio-electronics/130263-hand-held-uhf-wouxun-2.html#post1643154
See how you go. If no luck drop me a PM to remind me and I'll try and have a look tonight.

Steve,Took the set into Desert Comms in Alice,he had a hissy fit when I asked if he could put the channels in.........only the uhf!Reckoned he would lose his licence and I could end up in jail!!Tried again in Longreach, bloke there reckoned too involved a process...not worth doing, cost more that the actual reciever etc.So nothing resolved.

Hopefully we can get this sorted.
For starters, which version of the Wouxun program are you using. I've got KG-UVD1-V1.04.exe on my notebook so I'm guessing that's what I used.
When I run it without the radio connected and click on the Communiction menu, I can see COM1 greyed out, and COM2 available for selection. All others are greyed out.
What do you see on yours if you do that?

I know I stuffed around for a while, trying to sort out comm ports, and installing drivers............ it turned out that my plug wasn't pushed all the way into the handset. Once it clicked in properly, everything just worked. (Vista 64)

I have played with these radios, and they are a hassle. Most of the work is in inputting all the UHFCB frequencies. Hopefully it is in the file I have the link.
Once you upload the file into the radio, my experience is you need to go into the settings gs and change them back to your preferences ie no foreign language voice whenever you push a button.

My experience is the opposite. Load the file (yes that can be a hassle to the the PC and radio talking) but after that its just turn it on and away you go.
Did you load the file from here, or one you made up yourself? I used the one from here and it already has quite a few settings apart from just the frequencies IIRC.

Steve,
Am now back home, earlier than anticipated, due to a broken rear axle housing.See Technical Chatter.Handheld would have been useful when we swamped our dinghy in the croc infested Mary River...but that's another story!
Still having no luck with the Wouxun, but have made some progress,in that I have managed to get the frequencies on the Channel Message page.Using this computer which is Win7 64 bit,the Device Printer page shows the device as Prolific on com port 3.Have set the KG-UVD1P V2.11 port to com port 3.But when attempting to write to the Wouxun, first the channel 2 frequency highlights? then the download bar moves 4 blue indicators before it comes up with failed connection.Obviously I am doing something wrong....any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Yes - I saw your posts about the diff - bummer :(
You're doing better than I am with the radio right now. I can't even get the USB-serial driver to be happy on Win7 64bit. I originally did the programming on a 32bit Win7 machine but I no longer have that one.
Do you recall where you got the driver from and what it was described as? Was it specifically for Win7 64bit or more general?
Since you've already got past that bit, have you tried reading the existing config from the radio before you try and write to it?

OK, I can talk to mine again now.
After about an hour of trying various things, many reboots and driver install/uninstalls, mine just started working. I wasn't doing anything different, and now I can't get it to give the failed connection message.
Makes me think its something like a dodgy connection where it plugs into the radio.
Here's some notes that might be useful to others:
Win7 64bit.
Follow the info here about making sure windows doesn't automatically update the driver you are installing http://wouxun.us/Software/USB_Drivers/Installing%20Drivers.pdf
Driver install file is either named usb_vista09.exe or "USB Driver for Vista & Win7.exe". Both are the same file and show in windows as 2018kb, with file version number 10.50.0.125.
Programming software - both v2.0 and v2.11 work fine for me.
Info here on order of connecting cable and turning on radio etc: WOUXUN KG-UVD1P - N9EWO Review - (http://n9ewo.angelfire.com/kguvd1p.html)
To summarise:
Radio off, plug cable into radio, plug cable into computer, turn radio on....
Make 100% sure the programming cable is plugged fully into the radio.
Run the programming software and set the communication port to the port number that you find in device manager. If its above 20 you will need to reset your com ports using the info here: My Coffee cup: How to clear or Reset COM port ? (http://blog.cognitioninfotech.com/2009/01/how-to-clear-or-reset-com-port.html)

Steve,Fantastic result, all is good, the prolific driver appeared to be the stumbling block. The vista/win7 driver from the wouxun.us site did the trick.
Many thanks for your patience and putting me on the right track.
Cheers.Geoff

No problem. Glad it's all working OK now.
I think they are a great little radio, so let us know what you think once you've had a chance to try it out.
There are plenty of settings to play with if you are that way inclined, but TBH I just loaded the frequency file from here then turn on and talk!!
Mainly use it for out of vehicle recovery comms and as backup in case my main radio dies.
