Hi all just putting it out there have been having some problems with our 2008 TDV6 RRS.
It has problems starting in the morning(sounds like its running on only 3 cylinders). We have had the battery,
Altenator, EGR's and a chip on the ECU replaced(not sure which one) with the same result, difficult starting
mostly in the morning after sitting all night in the garage, but has also happened after being used for half
the day. It has also happened while my wife was driving down our street. We are getting slightly frustrated that
no one can definitively tell us what the problem is.
Has anyone heard of this or had this themselves? Any feedback is appreciated.

Sounds like glow plugs - lots of threads on disco3.co.uk about this issue at the moment.

Relatively simple job -if- they come out. Quite often they can break off, leaving part of the plug in there, which then requires the head to be taken off.
The great news there is that once you've lifted the body off the car, the heads are actually a pretty straightforward job!:bangin:

Now that you're listening, the UK guys have had some good success using a vibrating/impact tool designed specifically for glow plugs - you'd be wise to go in armed with this information before attempting the job, as if they break, you HAVE to fix it right there and then before starting the engine, and it is a BIG job.

It's a 5 year old diesel vehicle that's having trouble starting and idling properly. Glow plugs is the very first thing the mechanics should've suggested... where they pulled alternator from is anyone's guess... PS Just because the light goes out, doesn't mean they're working properly...

In the UK or here in bloody Goulburn in winter glow plugs will make a difference. For most coastal areas where most people live in general they aren't as important.

When my TDV6 was hard to start the mechanic went down the path of glow plugs. After they snapped off in the heads (both) he was in for a complete rebuild of the top end, at my expense.

The problem wasn't bloody glow plugs anyway it was injectors, which come out easy.

There is a LR bulletin re hard to startTDV6's, from memory they say to check that the injectors are flowing within certain parameters. If not change them.

I would avoid big time having your glow plugs taken out if possible.

Is this a common problem form TDV6's/8's?

For motor vehicles in general I would suspect a blocked fuel filter, a blocked fuel tank breather or a faulty low pressure fuel pump. You could try leaving the fuel cap released overnight and it might be worth bleeding the fuel system at the valve on top of the engine in case there's trapped air.

It could also be a faulty air or coolant temperature sensor.

Having the codes read should point to the right area, I am surprised that there are no dash indications.

If a temperature sensor is giving false readings that aren't out of range then there may not be any fault codes. One of my sons had a Saab that had difficulties starting and then keeping going when cold. Once the coolant temperature sensor was unplugged the ecm knew it was then out of range so used default values that allowed the engine to at least start and run well enough to get up to temperature. A new sensor was then fitted. The temperature sensor was suspected and then moreso because when it was tapped the engine ran properly for a few seconds.

Edit: If glow-plug failure then expect excessive smoke on startup.
Does the instrument temperature gauge show cold prior to startup when it should be showing cold?

I don't disagree but if it is running as bad as the OP has indicated it will be more than a sensor slightly out of spec. In my old 98 Freelander Diesel if the ECU detected a sensor out of spec it went to default mode - when in that mode the Check Engine Light was always on.

I would assume a RRS would be more sophisticated - something should be logged in the system.

Thanks for all the reply's it refreshing to know that people are still willing to help, the mechanic has told me that the glow plugs & associated wiring has been check but when i return it to him on wed ill re-ask that question.

There isnt excessive smoke once it does start but there is some smoke when its trying to start unsuccessfully.
Temp gauge seems to be working, moving freely as the temp increases/decreases.

The fault codes have been read but no indication to what it was, when its trying to start there are various faults lights but none stay on.
