I am back in Melbourne for a few days rest after running the Hotel at WC since the start of June, its been a very busy time and i thought i would grab a few days R&R before the Vics and NSW school holidays hit the track.

We have had quite a few AULRO members driving through drop in and say hi, its been great.

I will be back on deck on Monday night, if you are heading up the Oodnadatta Track be sure to drop in, i will be managing the place until at least the end of August. If you are after info on roads or tracks up that way feel free to contact us at the Hotel.

I have some great old pics of myself and a few mates on motorbikes and our backup vehicle a Dodge ute outside the WC Pub in the early 70's. We called into the pub on our way to Alice Springs via the Old Ghan Railway Line. Back then the Pub was owned by the wife of a policeman from Maree, Wilkinson.....maybe John, I think. Back when the South Australian Outback Police drove Land Rovers.
Peckernecks Store in Oodnadatta had a dirt floor in those days!

Cheers, Mick.

It crossed my mind how busy you were Dave, you certainly deserve some R&R with the effort you put in while we were there. When the rain started the evening before we landed we had to stop at a graders camp which fortunately had some gravel mounds which we setup up next to. It saved us from the mud. When we made it to William creek I remember you saying you we're about to close the pub as nobody was about, we had a hearty meal at your table and later you came by where we'd setup to let us know of the storm that was reported by a pilot to hit at 2am. It did, thunder, lightening some hail and about 9 mm of rain, we new we were stuck for a day or two although the road to oodnadatta was still reading open. There were at least 6 vehicles that came down the oodnadatta, each one doing their bit to chop it up, the patrol that had only 2 wheel drive, the blinged up black jeep also limping in 2wd, the white 100 series that just made it but stopped with a flat outside the pub, the 2 huge F250's probably did the most damage driven by real characters made it through, most of them had gone off the road at some point, so I had a short crack at it & realised we were better off staying. Finally the rd was closed and town came alive with stranded travellers for a few days. We had a great time there, the pub was flat out & the atmosphere was excellent. I couldn't think of a better place to be stopped.

Same David, it was great to meet you and thanks for keeping us updated with what was going on. We made it through the rest of the trip without any other incident other than the ford ranger breaking a leaf spring. Surprisingly the Jeep made it no worries across the Simpson without assistance, thank god! Till next time :)
