Well, the deal is done, and I'm now the proud owner of a RHD 101 GS... V8! Yup, V8. Once there and able to look at them all, it made sense to me to go with the V8, as being 'standard' (if a 101 can be standard) I should have less grief at the Rego place. The clinching thing for me tho was the Irish stuff on the door! Being Irish I had to own it!!! Have listened to my instincts tho and am not driving it back, as its not without its problems!! Here's a pic tho to be going on with and there will be more to follow once its home! :) Most importantly, a HUGE THANKYOU to Mick_Marsh for helping me get there and back today! Favour owed there! Good to meet other forum members too! Gav, I'll get to see your truck 'next time'! :)

Well done. You certainly got the pick of the bunch.
The early bird gets the worm, hey!
Would love to get that wide track Sankey. There was lots of looking at that RAF hardtop too.

Good for you mate. I'm sure a road trip home with it would have been good fun though?

Well done on the purchase mate. It was probably a big ask to drive it back in the end after it had been sitting about for so long, but at least you got to take it for a road test and know how it drives.:)
If you don't see mine before, you will see it at Melrose next year - hope yours is there too.:)
Cheers - Gav.

Gav, Simon, Tom, AJ and Mick at AJ's.
You should have been there too. Five blokes talking 101 all day. A very pleasant way to spend a Saturday.

Gav, defiantly yes to Melrose come hell or high water! Mick, thanks again for all your help. It was a great day with a lot of good discussion. Sleepy, not exactly sure about the Irish stuff yet (PS, love your truck, and remember looking at it when it was for sale, thinking I wish!!). Sadly they gotta little excited with the steam cleaner when it got here. Will be doing a little research once I have it home. It'll be wheels off, drums off, swivel seals to do, new tilt on, 4.7:1 diffs to find and fit, fuel tank to check/replace.... and the list goes on. Think the V8 could do with a little love too as the diesel is still on the flip side! Das, the road trip would have been great until as such time as it stops and I have to deal with it!! :p My instincts were saying no, and of late I've started to trust them more! Will post more when I get it, inc lots of pics of the good and bad!

There are "Irish Guards" logos on the doors. The suspicion is it was used by the Irish Guards.

Agreed new canvas and a proper NATO Pintle...:D
I have (well, Mick has) the new canvas, and I'm going to try and sweet talk AJ into giving me the correct NATO hitch for it as it would suit the trailer I'm going to build!!! Anyone got a pair of spare wheel step rings and extended nuts to go with?? Oh, the joys of a 101. Was good to get back behind the wheel of one tho!! :D

Looks like its been towing something heavy already?
Yes indeed.:D. Quite a bow on the towbar... There are no braces running to it either which didn't help too much.

More the case that it has insufficient support at its base... That'll b one of the first things to go on the scrap, to be replaced by a NATO hitch! Just want to get the damn thing home now!!

If I sell my series one for a decent price I can buy one.
I would consider a restoration

62395Well well well... I didn't think I'd see that truck in the flesh again!!! That's Piper 7!!!!! If it still has the engine in it that It did have, it goes like stink!!! Nice work!! I didn't realise you were bringing that one in!!! Here is a shot when it was working on the Rally Recovery scene with AMRO! Gav and Mick, that's why I thought I knew the rego number of the diesel at AJ's.. It's also a 'PUS' UK number!

What was done to the engine and drivetrain to make it go like "stink"?
I know that it has a fuel injected 3.9 but normally that would not be enough to make it go like "stink" so there must be more too it. Likewise even with a hot engine other changes would be needed to the drivetrain to get rid of the 101 rumble which gets worse with speed and is really a limiting factor for continuous higher speed.
On the level my 101 has a GPS top speed of 115kph and it has seen 120kph GPS speed with a tail wind and downhill. At those speeds you are wondering when it is going to fall apart or the front end fall out:(.

Yes even the new owner doesn't know why it goes like "stink".

I think he may have a idea. Some thing to do with a fulx capacitor.
101RRS
30th June 2013, 03:06 PM
I will ask him when I speak to him in a little while :).
Hmm flux capacitor - a bit high tech me thinks.
DasLandRoverMan
30th June 2013, 05:16 PM
Strangely it doesn't suffer terribly from prop rumble, a little when on the over run above 112kph, but otherwise good, it's still pulling well at 136kph in 4th O/D. I suspect once I'm done with it it should crack 150 with enough space.
The engine is a bit more than your average 3.9 V8, and to be honest it's a real joy to drive, and will be capable of moving faster still when it arrives over there, looking a helluva different to how it does now, but don't tell anyone...
I'll take some photos/measurements of the light bar for those who want them. It's a well executed bit of design which blends in well with the truck.
101RRS
30th June 2013, 07:32 PM
Yep - Das fitted a Flux Capacitor and I have it on good authority it has a 0-60mph time of 6 secs and a top speed of 120mph. Take the capacitor out and it will never get to 60.
