I got my 2.6 F-head running and the gearbox is buggered (no second and pops out of third) I have the gearbox out of a 2.25 diesel here that has been rebuilt, will it bolt up to it?

Cheers Luke

You do not mention Series (II/IIA/III).

However, the boxes are interchangeable, however you may need to swap your 6cyl bellhousing over to the 2.25D box.

While we are on gearboxes, my 67 IIa pops out of thîrd gear when you back off at about 30 MPH - when I remember I can hold it in gear as I back throttle off. Is this something that can be repaired easily?

That is either:
1. Worn synchro hub
2. Worn mainshaft or layshaft bearings (if you hold it in 3rd and go on and off the accelerator does it move back and forth?)
3. Detent problem (e.g. broken detent spring).
4. Loose nut on back of mainshaft (pull the top cover of t-case and check).

None are overly difficult or expensive to fix (yourself), but 1 and 2 will need the box removed, and if 2 then a complete rebuild may be needed.

I have never worked on a 6 - so can't remember if they have a different bellhousing.
Check the bellhousing bolt patterns and spigot/input shaft length and diameter (bush end). If they are different you will need to swap bellhousings between boxes (easy to do).

Bell housing is different between the fours and the six. Boxes are the same (for the same gearbox suffix number, but all are interchangeable).
