Hi all,
Have just picked up my '88 110 ex-army, passed RWC straight off the bat, 155k on the clock, runs great! A few items missing, which I am trying to source... Think it'll be a bit tricky as the Army have only just started selling them off. I think this was the third round of auctions this year.
Is it helpful to anyone to register the vehicle to REMLR? If so... what is the best way of doing it?
Also, does anyone have any info on parts for military LR's? Are most parts standard defender parts? (Eg: dash board light cover [missing], driver door doesn't close properly [door pillar catch loose], bonnet doesn't close properly [no idea what the issue is here... any ideas?])...
Looking forward to joining in with forums/ discussion.
Is there any way of 'finding' members in my local area?
Cheers,
Stripey

G'day Stripey and welcome to the AULRO forum. Most parts on them are the same as the Countys of the same vintage but there are some "army specific parts" as well. The ADF had their own parts manuals (RPS) or repair parts scales for the 110's, quite a few of these manuals have been on ebay over the last year. A have a few copies that cover most of the model variants so if you need any part numbers give me a call. The dash light cover - is that the lift up flap that covers the warning lights? - if so don't worry about replacing it as it as it is an ADF specific thing for light blackout. The bonnet will most likely be adjustment on the pin assembly and I reckon if you adjust and tighten the door pin it will be okay. I am sure that you will get a lot of enjoyment out of that 110, it is probably the strongest and most robust LR ever made and will still be going strong when most other models will be dead and gone - and the big bonus is there are no electronics, computers or anything like that, you can push start it and run it even without a battery.:D

This is my first post and the reason for joining is that i an looking to buy a 6x6 for conversion to a camper and i hope that there are people with enough LR practical experience that may be able to help me. The more wreckers i speak to, and even our Land Rover dealer have either said that they are not interested in supplying parts, or in the case of the LR dealer not permitted to supply parts to civilian owners of ex military vehicles because they are classified. I can't see that they need to remain classified if the forces are selling them to the public. I have always repaired all my vehicles and am used to having to adapt when parts are not available, but you can only do so much substitution. They say that the 6x6 Perentie's share some common parts with the 110 and the engine is the same as that of an Isuzu truck but it makes it hard when you can't get parts catalogues for things like axles and diffs. If things realy got bad i could get drive shafts made, but at what cost. How hard is it to keep one of these on the road and where is the best place to by parts?
The other thing is how good are these off road compared to say a 110 4x4? I have seen comments such as "6x6 Perentie's are easily bogged or don't have much ground clearance, but are these comments coming from people that have had first had experience with these vehicles or is it just pub talk. Some people say stick to a 4x4 with a trailer, but trailers can be a bit of a pain and if one does ones calculations it doesn't take much to exceed the legal GVM of most 4x4's, as the boys in blue will soon tell you. Hope someone out there can assist me before the next vehicle auction. Kind regards, Frank.

I drove them on and off for 20 years
I believe you need a truck license to drive them.
They have a wider track than 110, there are pro and cons, turning circle is huge but it didn't really cause any problems.....everybody just had to wait.
They are very noisy inside the can at 100km/hr.....extremely noisy. I used to wear ear muffs when belting up the hi-way.
Mine used to be loaded at or above its GVM and we used to drive at max. Speed everywhere 110km/hr and burn around 20L/100
Intermediate tyres used to cop a flogging, bank on them lasting half as long as the others.
We went everywhere a 110 went.......with a much smoother ride. Never got stuck on beaches.
They would make a good platform for a camper.

Thanks Kelvin for the prompt reply glad to hear that they did at least perform off road, otherwise we may as well just get a 2WD. License is not a problem as i have got HC license but the parts availability still worries me, Frank.

I doubt you will need many!
There are army parts manuals around, members on here including myself have some, if you need anything just post it up here and someone will have the part number pronto. I know where there is a complete perentie 6X6 rear end including diffs, springs, rockers etc if you ever need any.

Parts should not be a problem but you may need to go to a land rover wrecker not your average one, some time in the future the ADF spares will be auctioned off that will make things easier too:)

...... and even our Land Rover dealer have either said that they are not interested in supplying parts, or in the case of the LR dealer not permitted to supply parts to civilian owners of ex military vehicles because they are classified.
I call BS!! Ask the dealer to provide you with written evidence that they cannot sell parts because they are "Classified". He is simply lazy and lying through his teeth. Find yourself another dealer.
Even on the 6x6, many of the mechanical parts are common with the 4x4 Perentie, and indeed with the civilian market County 110. As the others have said, parts lists are available and will give the parts numbers as both a military staock number and also as a standard LR part number. The engine is a standard Isuzu 4BD1T-RB or -RBG. All parts are available genuine through Isuzu, or through many aftermarket resellers (even E-Bay). Even some of the "Military special" parts are to be found on E-bay (AU, UK, or US), but that shouldn't concern you too much if you want to use it as a camper. (You might find yourself selling some of those bits on here! :D)

actually...
some parts on the 110's in some configurations are classified.
they should all be removed prior to sale.
90% of the parts are pretty much county parts.

Gidday Stripey!
After 6 months or so of research and watching andprocrastination I am now in the same boat as you – I’m now the chuffed owner ofan ex-military 110, purchased through the Australian Frontline Machinery/Graysonlineauction in late July.
Only went to look for “research” purposes, but liking one GeneralService Cargo unit in particular I subsequently thought “what the hell”, andfollowing a brief bidding tussle it was mine. Curiously “what the hell” waswhat the wife said too, but her tone of voice was markedly different……..:p
Having owned and driven a Series 1 for 30+ years, I figuredI was suitably prepared for a bone-jarring ride and litany of rattles andclangs – how surprised I was! Overall the vehicle is a lovely drive once it’sup and going, and not having owned a big diesel before, I am very impressedwith the power and torque of the Isuzu.
The vehicle came with full service and modification records, and done about 180 k’s based on said records. My first job(s) are benchmarkchanging all the fluids, adding some basic security measures, and assessingwhat hasn’t been done to date in terms of general maintenance and any obviousfix-ups/tidy-ups required.
I’ve bought from Dave’s Interesting Things Shop (check theAulro Shop link) an information compilation CD for the 4BD1(T) model, whichincludes the 110 Owners Manual, Rover workshop manual excerpts forengine/transmission etc., 4BD1 Parts Manual, Defender 110 Parts Catalogue (1987on) and (what I reckon is the jam on top) a full range of Perentie-specificArmy Ops & Repair/Servicing instructions. Best $20-something dollars everspent – highly recommended.
Dunno where you hail from, but it’s a small world so mightsee you out and about one day.

G'day Cummo
Welcome to firstly AULRO and to the ownership of a Perentie,I don't know if you are aware that the Australian military Landrover with the Izusu 4BD1 motor is the only vehicle of it's type in the world, designed tested and approved here by Landrover Aust.& UK.
I would advise you to register and join up to REMLR (registry of ex military land rovers).com there is a wealth of knowledge on that forum.
cheers
