Hi,

As the title suggests I am thinking about getting myself a LR3.

I have found this one which suits my price range perfectly :) but am unsure about the high KMs

2005 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 3 SE for sale in NSW - Sydney $20,000 6 SP AUTOMATIC SUV used @ carsguide.com.au (http://www.carsguide.com.au/cars-for-sale/D_1996174/used-2005-LAND-ROVER-DISCOVERY-3-SE--Automatic-Premium-Unleaded-SUV-in-NSW-Sydney.html)

Wondering if anyone knows anything about the history of this one or has had a look at it themselves?

Should I be concerned about the kms?

Thanks

Looks nice and reads like a good car and at that price you could throw some cash at any possible problems and still have a great car at a good price. a few goodies already on it to:)

Looks in nice clean condition for the age and mileage. Not badly priced either.
And just to be pedantic, it's a Discovery 3, or D3, and that's what the badge on the back will say. LR3 is what the Americans and Canadians call it.

You beat me to it - we do not have LR3s in Australia. Discoverys yes - LR3s no.:D

Is that a mismatch interior?
Beige Dash sections and Black leather seats?
Looks like it has a winch too.
285 / 60 R 18 Cooper Zeons as well.

And I knew that as well!!! That will teach me for have a sneaky AULRO session when I should be concentrating at work!
Still interested to hear peoples view on a 238000km car? Even though it is a good price, don't really want to get it and then have to spend a whole lot of money on the motor/gearbox etc?

For the engine, you'll have no problems at that mileage. Those V8s are tough, and if you hunt around on here or Disco3.co.uk you'll find very few with problems.
For the gearbox though, take a look through the service history. It should have been flushed and oil changed by now, a good sign would be that it has had the gearbox sump changed for a steel one.

Hmm not yet it wouldn't have - 240,000km or 10 years so in theory no work on the gearbox.
As the car is just 2,000km short of the distance interval I would ensure a full service was done on the gearbox - in fact a full 240,000km service.

Thanks Garry, that's what I get for relying on memory rather than looking it up, I had it in my mind it was 220,000.

But you are correct on checking the thing - not sure if too many would get to 240,000km without needing work.

Looks like the seats have been re-trimmed - definately not original colour combination.
Are they original wheels? Don't look right to me, but may just be the colour.
All just looks a bit odd to me - I'd be wary.

Dunno about the interior but those look like the optional 18" wheels to me.
As for buying it - at $20k it looks a bargain to me!!! But do remember it was a $100k new and servicing costs reflect that price not the current one!
Would I buy it? Yes - been delighted with our V6 D3 :)

The front grille does not look original, looks more like a D4 or Rangie style grille.

Probably cloth seats originally the pockets on the back of the seats are not right, colour doesn't match. However they did a good job.
Bling grill and wheels do not look original.
Someone has spent a lot of money on it by the look of it.
Find out the vin and ask a dealer the service history for recalls etc.

The grill looks like a modified RRS grill and the wheels look like standard RRS 18" rims that have been painted.
If I call correctly there was a trim option that mixed colours so may be original.

If they are RRS wheels they could be illegal, they may not have the correct load rating ISTR.
101RRS
4th July 2013, 11:28 AM
There is only a few hundred Kgs weight difference between the two cars - RRS are of a slightly lower load rating than D3 wheels but still within the load requirements. This was done to death about 18 months ago so a search might find the discussion.

If those tyres are 285/60/18 then a diameter of 799mm may mean they are not legal size in your state, certainly not in QLD where max legal is 778mm (763+15), this may get you a new set of your choice.

The rules have now changed in QLD. You're now allowed 50mm bigger, as of 1st November last year.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I thought the only options for fitting 18" wheels to the V8 were the GOE wheels? Is this not the case?

Would these fit an MY06 V8 SE?

No that is for the D4 3.0L, V8 cannot take the 17 inch wheels.

Whatever the wheels are - I guess they are repainted versions of what is on this D3

Yep they look like a painted version of my wheels. 18 inch HSE rims. The car was ordered with these from new, from what I was told 07 was the first year you could get them.

Doesn't look bad, has a winch and no rear guards so it may have spent plenty of time off road, not really a bad thing I'm sure.
And I agree with others, the seats have been re trimmed it appears, but they look ok.
However the 3rd row seats appear to be in the factory black, you can see the difference with the photo from the rear showing the shiny 2nd row headrests. Dunno, would have to see it in the flesh.
And that black paint doesn't look like it is that many km's old, especially if it has been off road, I'd assume it has had a coat of jam. Id check all panel gaps very closely for crash history. But again it could be my failing eyes.
Another thing, it has the optioned steering wheel with the stereo controls with the non hi-line stereo, first one of this combination I have seen.
Just get a top notch LR Mechanic to look it up and down and check codes etc, there are a couple of mobile guys that can help

Those are HSE seats, hence the perforated leather. Maybe the owner obtained them from a wrecker, unless premium leather was an option on the D3 as it was on the RRS.

An option I have seen ticked ONCE on the earlier RRS. The later RRS seats looked way better with the premium leather option.

Thanks for all the feedback and pointers/areas to look.

I'm going to check it out this weekend. I briefly spoke to Pete from Roving Mechanical after seeing his name mentioned on here a couple of times. If I still like the look of it after my inspection I will arrange for him to do a prepurchase report. He said he does a bumper to bumper check and will advise if there is anything likely to need recitifing in the near future and give an estimated price to repair. While he obviously can't be 100% accurate it should give me a good idea.

I'll keep you all posted :)

My SE has the same leather seats but the different colour on the grab handles and the back of seat pockets make me think they may be aftermarket ?
But looks like a good job either way owner put money in that he won't get back.
Have a look underneath especially the exhaust under the rear diff to se how damaged it is.

Sorry, I meant to ask some more on the above. You are saying If I get the VIN and phone any LR dealer they can give me the service history and whether the car has had all the recall repairs carried out? Even though I'm not the owner (yet :))?

Thanks

Put the VIN into Tpoix and you can also get a lot of information on the vehicle, in particular recalls not done, when it was built, options etc. You will need to join though but is a simple registration process.

Odd, I put the VIN (from rego papers) for my MY12 D4 SE into TOPix and got "VIN not found"... not sure if I did it before or after subscribing.

Maybe you put a 0 in instead of a O or vice versa, otherwise the VIN on the rego is wrong. Then go into service manual on dash without motor running, to display the VIN.

Just a quick update, I went to have a look at the car on the weekend and have decided against buying it.
Nothing major wrong with it that I could see, condition was to be expected for 240k. Seemed to run ok on the short drive I took it on. The tyres are pretty noisy though!
Had definitely been used off road, plenty of mud evidence underneath. Interior was all leather including the very rear seats, button missing of the radio, what looked like a cigarette burn in one of the coin trays. One of the headlamps had condensation on the inside which might mean it’s had a bump and is no longer a sealed unit??
I checked the VIN on topix and it had no outstanding campaigns. The service history didn't cover the full 240k, ended at 135k I think. I'm also not 100% sure the service history was for this car.
One thing I have learnt is to not post a link to the car you are interested in on a forum! The guys told me had loads of interest in it and showed me the stats from carsguide. This one had waaaaaaaaay more views than the others he listed on there so he really wasn’t interested in negotiating the price. Also wasn’t happy with the price offered on the trade in vehicle.
Thanks again for all the pre-purchase feedback, the search continues………..

I test drove that one on Sunday.
I would be a tad careful with the Trans on that one it slams through the gears regularly.
The Coopers tires are very noisy even at 60k.
Interior is good.
Only has one key, dealer says another is on the way.
Cant say I was that impressed with the way it went, it was ok but wasnt that much quicker than my P38.
It has a few worn bushes in the suspension it bangs a fair bit.
Over all it was enough to turn me off the D3 and to go for an L322 again.
BUT........for 20k it seems a fair buy.
