Looking at doing the Simpson desert crossing next year in my Disco 1 V8 and was wondering how much fuel would i need to carry?
I have a 120+ litre long range tank and 55l lpg tank.
There will be 3 of us in the vehicle and i have a full length roof rack, how many litres in jerry cans would i need?
Thanks

Only time you got too much fuel is when you are on fire!
(sorry not helpful but couldnt resist)

from Oodnadatta via Macumba station, I used 1 tank (probably about 80lt) and filled up with 40 litres out there. We did a 640km crossing. I have td5 so use fair bit less, but you wont travel same distance as we did either. Btw I left grumble in low range manual mode most of the time often travelling in 4th low range which is same as second hi.....I personally preferred it that way....not much difference really. Let tyre pressures be your friend out there.

100 litres=100kg weight......work it out yourself....you really need to keep your weight down as much as is humanly possible

Thanks, seems plenty of info on diesels doing it, not much on the thirsty petrols,

ummm yeah we had two petrol landcruisers with us, one a LC200 V8, and the other 4.5lt six, but they were too embarrassed to tell me how much fuel they used. I think they both had 150 or 180 litre tanks with 3-4 jerries on their racks. I have no idea how the rover v8 compares to them....

When we went across we had a TD5 Defender (mine) and a V8 Manual D2 (Also now mine!)
The D2 wasn't too bad, from memory between Birdsville and Mount Dare it used 120-130 litres.. I will see if I can confirm that. (I used 75 by comparison)
However, there is a big difference in economy between a d1 and a d2, especially if the d1 is an auto.
It was pretty soft when we went across and we headed east west.
It also only had 1 person in it.

- If you can find out how much the above mates used... yours will most likely drink more. :(:(:(
Take 'plastic' fuel containers.... they weigh less than steel ones.

Sounds like i need alot:(
Was thinking a straight forward crossing from Birdsville to Mt Dare is around 500km with the V8 using 40l/100km and lpg 50l/100, so i would need 160l of petrol plus safety margin, so my 120l tank plus 60l in jerrys.
Does that sound about right???

They recommend a minimum of 180 litres for a Diesel, so would need quite a bit more for a petrol V8. Bank on at least 30% more fuel consumption than on road.

Bloody heck!:o:o 40L/100!!!!!!!
A D1 V8 driven sensibly in winter on the sand with correct tyre pressures WILL NOT USE as much as a V8 or 4.5 petrol 6 landcruiser. These things see some serious fuel consumption as they weigh in at 2.5 to 3 tons at least when loaded.
Keep the weight down, service and tune the vehicle properly prior to departure and pay attention to the tyre pressures and gear selections.

Was thinking a straight forward crossing from Birdsville to Mt Dare is around 500km with the V8 using 40l/100km and lpg 50l/100, so i would need 160l of petrol plus a safety match, so my 120l tank plus 60l in jerrys.
Does that sound about right???
:p:p:p Sorry couldn't help myself!

I know 40l/100km is crazy, but thats what it used on lpg towing recently, so i thought it would be a safe figure (not happy with economy after recent "tune" by mechanic).

True JC, if i had a match that would solve all the problems as its insured for heaps more than its worth and then i could get a diesel;)

Forget GAS, it is very uneconomical on low compression engines with worn camshafts.....Prior to the trip you should be concerned with max economy on fuel only. The low comp 3.9V8 can happily take lots of spark advance, and ensure your vac advance unit and distributor are working correctly.
If you are getting worse than 30l/100km driven sensibly then I would be surprised, most of all however keep the weight down.....:) Every Kg has to be stopped by the brakes, accelerated by the engine, turned by the steering and supported by the suspension. All this in a soft and friable substance (Sand). Think about how much effort it takes for a person to push a wheel barrow along bitumen and then suddenly onto soft sand....Now THERE'S a comparison for you:D

Weight down, throttle pedal up. I normally get around just above idle where possible. Oh and keep the speed down on the dune faces unless you like the axle housings hitting the bumpstops.
I did it in 85 litres in a Tdi, unrelated of course but surely you won't use twice as much?

I have read this also, but why in a diesel would you need 180l for 500-600km unless there route is much longer?
Thats why im worried if i can carry enough in the V8.

Just had a quick look at the Mt Dare website:
Mt Dare Hotel - Vehicle Preparation (http://www.mtdare.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9&Itemid=8)
for a ULP Prado they recommend take 180l, expect to use 120 - 155
for a 'large' vehicle (their example is Patrol - but maybe V8 Disco too?) take 200, expect to use 130-170l. So your estimate of 180l is pretty spot on.
no wonder they say ulp..
