View Full Version : Are Landy drivers snobs?

As part of my employment as a Network Officer in the Kimberley region of WA I travel on average up to 3500ks per week. Most of this travel is done in a current model HiLux. Not my choice, however, it is generally a capable vehicle, except in soft sand. Regardless, it is my work vehicle. During the day to day humdrum of my job I pass many Landys of all shapes, sizes and types and generally towing the obligatory palace on wheels. Some of these palaces would really be testing the towing capacities of the respective Landies let alone the operators. That statement is not on it's own with Landy operators. Nevertheless, I always offer a wave or salute to the brand. It is a rare moment when i get a wave back or any recognition whatsoever. 'Tis a shame because i thought Landy owners were a happy and fun bunch whom would return a wave and recognition of a great brand. Some of these operators look like they have a scowl burnt into their heads, as if to say "What?" "Why could that mere Toyota driver be waving at me?" There's only one answer. I love the Landy brand and it helps bring a smile to me when I see a scowl upon your grumpy sunburnt faces, when I am having great day. You guys should really wear blockout when you're driving and smile a little. If you still can.
Come on guys give a wave and smile a little. It might brighten your day.

Cheers
Rob.

In the past year I've done 'the lap' and caravaned to Birdsville, Cameron, Innaminca etc. I found once out of town 99% of people wave regardless of vehicle.

must admit I get the same response from Land Rover owners when I'm in the company hilux. I give big waves but they just look stunned as to why would someone in a lux wave to them.

I find it hard to come to any firm conclusion about who waves and who doesn't.

On one trip to Darwin, I was becoming convinced that when I waved, I didn't get a response from women and from people in vehicles with NT plates.

I had just about enough evidence to confirm that theory when I got a wave from a woman in a vehicle with NT plates. :)

BTW, if any Land Rover drivers get a wave from someone in a red 1988 Camry, it probably means that I have momentarily forgotten which vehicle I am in and have waved instinctively. :D

now been with local GOV for 3 years and cover 100 rural Km from depo.
this is the first job that ive had to drive a truck most days and the rural road require both hands on the wheel when passing.Ive had a few cars in that time and often people make comment on a new vehicle on the road.

most locals wave--and most living on back roads expect that you know who they are.

the non wavers are from obvious various groups or just blind.
those that expect to be waved to will let you know.

I had to have that if your tinted window were not so dark--or if you painted the company logo on the bonnet you get a wave.

this week I got bogged when I moved to the shoulder to pass an oncoming cattle truck.in slop over the wheel nuts the length of the truck and 4 ton trailer.I now can expect more waves from that area.

In my 10 years living in the Wide Bay area (Childers and Moore Park Beach) never a Toyota driver waved back to me. I know that Bundy is the Toyota kingdom but courtesy it is not there.
When I use to ride my bike every rider just say hello by moving his head and I was riding a BMW.:)

Dave,
If you were in my area and I came across you. First I would've had a chuckle then I would've called in the nearest Service Crew to help. Most of the crew tow around a loader or some other plant that could help in that kind of situation. If that was no good we'd pull out the stove and boil the billy.

Just come back from a trip mo Birdsville, and got waves from 90% of vehicles but I have to say that despite driving a Disco, I got significantly fewer waves from disco drivers than any other make.

One night n the birdsville caravan park I was camped in a whole corner of Landy's (all Defer's except my Disco). Lovely people:)

RobG'day Rob, good to see you're still enjoying the humour on AULRO :).
You've been up there for a while now - any plans to head back this way?

In the metro area we only wave to Deafeners and the Cook insists on doing that even if we're in her Camry!
On country roads it's a finger lift to all, especially above the 26th.
Can't see the point of waving to yobs in Hifluxs etc.

Scott,
There's been some rumblings back East that my presence may be required soon. With new contracts being tendered for as we write. That would suit the family as my young blokes 5 now and the girl 5mths. Schooling is still a bit of an issue as is the weather. The young fella wants to get outside and run around as kids do, but most of the time it's just too hot for him. So the best thing i can do is send them to England to spend 4mths of the year with the Outlaws. Win-Win situation. At least I don't feel guilty leaving them on their own for weeks at a time sometimes.
You're right about it being a while- 2 years next week. It's gone so quick. From Brown Snake attacks to dog attacks (x2) to car accidents (many) to road train accidents, to feral people attacks. The list goes on. A book could be written about this 2 years and maybe will one day. But for now for the families sake it maybe time to return to the more mundane and urbane life of the East coast. It would be sad to leave but i will have some great memories.

Cheers
Rob

I have to admit that after a few years out bush I became a bit of a wave-aholic. Just the lazy one-to-two-fingers-off-the-steering-wheel kind of wave, but still a wave. Most locals wouldn't wave to tourists, but I'd wave to anyone and feel that rush of connection if I got the one (or two) finger salute in return.

I tend to think that the urge to wave is inversely proportional to how much of a hermetically sealed box you're in. If you're in a climate controlled, sound proof, tinted windowed bubble listening to the strains of something soft at volume 2 it's pretty unlikely you're going to want to engage with a wild-eyed and dust covered Defender driver hurtling towards you with it all hanging out, or off.

I also own an a MX5 sports and mx5's nearly ALL wave to each other.
However having owned a d2 for nearly a year and living near Geelong , I could count the number of returned waves I get on one hand.

I went for a 4wd through Mt Mee forestry today and was disappointed with the amount of return waves I got in my D4. What made it particularly disappointing was that most of the time I was sticking my car into the bush to let them get through on the narrow track, and they still didn't wave back. They couldn't blame sun in their eyes either because it was in mine. Oh well, I'll keep waving anyway.

if anyone waves at me in other vehicles ill always wave back, means they are part of the landy family as well even if they may not own one, they share the same love for them :D
