Hi all,
I recently posted reports on towing with a Puma 2.4 and possible intention of re-mapping the ECU. I have been very interested in members reports for some time on who, what and why they have looked/carried out this option with either BAS or Alive.
I had a bad intermittent “flat spot” at around 1800-1900 RPM and this of course was causing “snatching” along with backlash through transmission. The vehicle has just completed a 14,000k trip towing a 2.7t Jayco van and just on a tonne payload.
About a week after the trip the engine light showed intermittently and then eventually stayed on. Thinking this was a possible EGR related problem I contacted BAS and decided to purchase one of his re-maps as most of the members posts indicated the BAS was most successful.
The whole process took five working days, most of this was waiting for the interface device to arrive. Once this arrived I read the current ECU and emailed this to BAS, with in three hours the “update” arriving back and it was uploaded to the vehicle that evening.
I road tested the vehicle and the difference was amazing, the vehicle drives like a “car" in city conditions.
Also the driveline is very smooth to operate, with absolutely no clunking of any kind now, as for the power difference it too has made the entire vehicle a new experience to drive as the acceleration is almost instant and smooth. I did request that the EGR be disabled, although the cost was high at just over $1000’s I feel in my opinion going forward it will benefit both ongoing EGR possible costs and the driving experience has been improved.
According to Aulro and Defender2 forums there are many areas that Defender Puma owners complain about and I wonder why Landrover has not been able to achieve some of these fixes/results at point of delivery.
Would I recommend the BAS re-map, with-out doubt!:)

Yep, I thought it was a lot of coin before I got mine done - now I think it's a bargain!

Bit dangerous though - remap has been followed by intercooler, followed by new air intake, soon to be followed by a bigger exhaust...

I can report the same -

1. Much smoother drive in traffic
2. Lower coolant temperatures
3. Find myself looking for a 7th gear on the open road
4. 1km/ liter improvement in fuel consumption (1 liter/ 100km) - used to get 10km/ liter now getting just shy of 11km/ liter (9.1liter/ 100km)
5. Beautifully smooth power delivery in low range off road.

All this with just the Map, no extras yet...

n plus one - what have you done to air intake?

Cheers,

Lou

I paid a lot less than you quote here - for those interested make direct contact with Peter from BAS -

My experience with 2.4 remap - power through all gears and rpm is consistent, smooth, and vehicle has become a pleasure to drive.

I can report the same -

1. Much smoother drive in traffic tick
2. Lower coolant temperatures - same, maybe 1C higher
3. Find myself looking for a 7th gear on the open road tick tick
4. 10km/ liter improvement in fuel consumtion (1 liter/ 100km) what! I've been diddled. I can achieve 10l/100km, not 1l/100km..
5. Beautifully smooth power delivery in low range off road. tick

Hi, no other mods done, the vehicle is a 110 grey, snorkel, winch, dual batteries, Muglo 45l fuel tank,BF AT’s and the usual other add on’s. As for the fuel consumption, will be a while before I can give a report on fuel this with the update, previously unladen around town I used to get 9.5l/100-10.5l/100, however as it drives now it is not an area of interest yet, just cant believe how it now hammers…..and no clunks and so on, I guess we pay the price for not having people like BAS around local to help us owing to the low numbers of Defenders registered in Aust. If LRA warranted these upgrades there would certainly be a lot more, for the reality of all this is where can a 4x4 tow vehicle be purchased for $54,000’s odd and be asked to do what the Defender can do, I unfortunately did not see another Defender towing any thing substantial from Brisbane-Broome, but I did stay in a lot of caravan parks on the way unfortunately did not have anybody with me to enjoy the trip. The next one is towing the van to Cook-town Q.

I've done Nugget's kit plus removed the static fan in the ducting - money well spent in my book!
