Can anyone tell me, how to tell how much oil is in the gearbox of a puma.
The filler plug hole is not the level hole, therefor you can't put something in to test the level. I have had a bit of aluminium wire bent and there is no oil 50mm down from the bottom of the plug hole I then bent it so it would go down 75 mm but it hit something inside the box so I could not get a level. I don't want to drain it just to measure it, as the oil I have been quoted is $80 a litre
and not keen on draining and refilling with the same oil. The puma has only done 20 K and just want the check the gearbox before heading to the scrub.
Thanks in anticipation.
Lindsay.

Pretty sure it's not the classic 'level with the fill plug' story with the MT82. As above, it's 2.4 to fill and 2.2 to refill.
If I get mine back together tomorrow I'll give you the measurement on mine.

Thanks for the replies. So the plug in the circle is the plug that that is removed to fill with. There is another plug to the front on the same side and a little higher. This is the one (I think ) that is shown on the defender 2 site . Can this hole circled be used to dip for the oil level?

It's 2.2 litres. I had a similar issue. Two months ago my gearbox started leaking, and I was keen to know how much oil was left in it and wanted to top up, but found no oil level checking plug, the only way was drain the oil and refill with new oil. I hate the stupid design:mad:.

What oil did you use for the G/Box?
Need something that is readily available.
A castrol product would be good.
The UK oils are named differently from our oils, the castrol site says refer to dealer:(
