Help buying a 98 freelander petrol

I know nothing about Land Rovers, i am looking at a 98 petrol one. havent seen it yet, guy says it needs new clutch, is still drivable but slipping. has no rego, he cant afford to fix it he's a pensioner. What things should i look for and what does anyone thing of this model. thanks
