Hi All,
I just Re-Mapped my Defender ECU with a Stage 1 Re-Map from Jose at TD5 Inside. I've only driven 40kms up the Princess Hwy, however, the changes are very noticeable already.

First Impressions:
More power, partic low down in 2-3-4 gears. Great power on the hwy. Pushes very hard, all the way from 70km/h in 5th right out to 120km/h. I will post a more next week after l do some kms with it (and off road).

As far dealing with TD5 Inside goes:
Jose has been a champion to deal with. Professional. Great communication from Portugal via email. He has answered my many, many seemingly dumb questions...! Jose still offers an AULRO special price ($340AUD).

My Mods:
2.5" straight through exhaust

Thanks to Tim Owen (towe0609 on here) for use of his Nanocom.

(PS I have NO commerical interest in this Company).

Cheers,
Mike

If it's Jose from Portugal then its Td5 Inside, Td5 Alive (Alive tuning) is in the UK.

G'day Mike!

Good to hear good results.

Just my $0.02 on this, though. Soon after we bought our TD5 110, we sheared the layshaft, while changing up to 5th gear. The general consensus is that the thinner part of the layshaft (that runs 5th and reverse gears) is susceptible to shearing. This is more likely when engine mods were done (like ours, ours has been chipped, intercooler upgraded, etc), and with regular pushing of all that extra power through the thinner, relatively weaker layshaft at the 5th gear.

Since I rebuilt the box and looking at the design, I drive very differently now. 5th gear only gets used when at 95 kph, and she never gets pushed hard in 5th. I'll always drop down to 4th (strongest gear in the box), and let her rev a bit more.

Again, just my opinion. It's very tempting to just push the foot down to get up that hill in 5th, though. If you're interested there are a few threads around that discuss it. "Layshaft" is a good place to start looking.

Enjoy!
Michael.

Hi Michael
Thanks for the info re: the layshaft. I honestly had not considered that at all.
I dont tend to drive 'hard' anyway - it's a Defender!
But worth knowing in any case.

Hi, is it just the exhaust you've changed? still got the EGR?

Hi
Yes. Only exhuast at the moment. Am going to do EGR and silicone hoses (recommended by Jose).

Um - l must admit l am not familiar with how to or why re: EGR Blocking. I need to do some reading on here.

Could I ask how you did the remap - what process did you follow, did you post the ECU away? I'm interested in mapping my TD5 but I'm not sure exactly how you do it, and what you need to be able to do it?

Hey BilboBoggles,
Depends what year model TD5 you have?
If its a later model (post 10/2001) you just have to upload the current MAP with a Nanocom and email it off the Jose,
If you're a forum member I think he charges $340inc AUD via Paypal and he custom maps your car to the level you ask for then emails it back to you.
Then you use the Nanocom to download it back to the car which takes a few minutes and "Viola" you have a totally different level of power and acceleration.
At any stage with a Nanocom you can re download your original Map if you wish.
I have a Stage 2 and 3 Map and have stayed with the 3 as i like the power curve lower in the range. But in saying that I haven't done enough KMs with it to see how much fuel it uses. I also dont always put my foot to the floor like some people might.

The Stage 2 uses about the same fuel as normal but it really depends if you keep putting your foot down or not.

I also installed a larger inter cooler which helps give the motor cooler more dense air which in turn helps performance and helps keep EGT's lower.
I have also removed the EGR and installed new Silicon Turbo hoses.

I can totally recommend Jose as well.

If you have prior to post 10/2001 then you actually either have to send off your whole ECU to him. Have a look at his site as he has some FAQ's on there about it.

Another one for td5 inside..

Jose goes above and beyond any other tuner i have dealt with (which is most of them).

Thanks for the notes here everyone. I have been looking for a while and have just emailed Jose. I am constantly towing 2-3T so it will be interesting to see the difference!
