How tall?

255\85r16s from Maxxis, BFG etc are reasonably common

As Mark said,255/85/16 is what you want...in whatever flavour you want.

You said 33x9.5. That is what you have at present.

This is already ~25 mm over standard, which is the maximum allowed under the old rules. I think QLD has adopten the NCOP, which then gives you +50 mm (34"). Simex are about the only mud tyres in 34" size.

I believe it may(?) be possible to go larger if you do not have a spring or body lift, but you would need to talk to an engineer/blue plater about that.

I got 1/2 a doz "7.50 x 16"' CASES in very good condition, took them to Bridgestone for delivery to BANDAG to retread. Cost $145 ea, I've just got back to Cooky after a 4 month, 23,000 klm trip round north (including, Hells gates, Boorooloola, Gibb River Road, Great Central Road, Boulia &c You cant see the wear, no punctures, perfect, this is on the County 110. My series 2 uses the same Bandag retreads, and has had then on for 6 years and 100,000 miles (160,000klm) still not worn out. The tread pattern is Bandag BDLT, good grip in mud, not super on sand as they are a bit skinny for that.

Silverstone MT117 would fit the bill
eg
4x Silverstone MT-117 Extreme Mud Terrian Tyres 35" - 10.5 R16, Suspension Stuff (http://www.suspensionstuff.com.au/shop/product_info.php?products_id=5862)

Having seen the vehicle in question, concerns over compliance aren't that big an issue, just performance;)
You do still have the monster?
BDave

Edit: Sorry, late night posting..
Just noticed this was in the 90-110 section so havn't seen this one.
Going mild this time mate?

You could try the interco SSR-41R.
35 x 10.5 radial fairly aggressive mud. Works well for me !
They are good on the road as well....

I think there is also an 8.25R16 or 8.5R16 size tyre out there, likewise a 9R16 depending on how big you want to go.

I would love to get my hands on some old Michelin XCL or XZL in 8.25R16 (34 inch tall) but alas long discontinued. The 900R16 or metric 255/100R16 are about $750/tyre and are super heavy construction. Not really great for our LRs even though they were fitted to some in the military....

Didn't realise the 8.25"s were no longer made...

FWIW, I believe that size and up use steel belted sidewalls :o

In my book, 750 x 16's are tall and skinny! You can get them in a chevron tractor pattern!! Serious muddy... Be hairy on the road tho!!! ;) We used to run something called a Firestone SAT's when trailing in the UK. They were the tyre to have before Mud Terrains and Grabbers came out....

the SAT were the standard by all accounts, the Darien Gap RR apparently ran some in a large size than 750/16.

750/16 is a great size that suits many needs BUT unfortunately all the current day majority of 4x4 owners are running 33-35 on DD and tourers, so the ruts are now to deep for the easy tracks when on 750/16 or 235/85...

what a ****!!!

I thought all the michelin truck/4x4 tyres have steel belted sidewalls. I know the 7.50x16 XCLs and XZL(?)s fitted OEM to defenders both do.

AFAIK the 7.50/16 XZL's don't, or at least the ones I had didn't.

The steel belted sidewall versions only have something like a 120km/h or lower speed rating.
