We're considering buying a second car and are a bit confused by the effective differences between the MY11 and MY13 SDV6 HSEs:

- MY11 has a TDV6 ELD11 engine and 6 gears, the MY13 has LR-SDV6 and 8 gears

- MY11 has slightly worse fuel consumption and shorter average range

- the MY11 I looked at has a gear lever, the MY13s all have the little rotary knob

- the MY11 I looked at has 19" wheels; 20" seems pretty common on the MY13s

Is there anything else?

The engine in both is the SDV6, supposedly the MY13 has 3 more KW.
The fuel economy difference will be pretty much all due to the new 8 speed transmission.

The MY13 ICE is different I think it has more speakers.

As you have noticed the major difference is the 8 speed transmission which comes with a rotary knob and paddles instead of a shifter. This has changed the centre console, the high/low range and air suspension switches.

If you can afford a MY13 and can get a good deal I would go for it. The HSEs seem to hang to their resale fairly well and I don't think a the second hand ones are good value.
Actually there is new MY12 in Townsville that is very good value.

Thanks for that information!

How easy is to to extend warranties on privately-sold second hand vehicles that are still within their initial 3yr warranty period? Any idea of the cost?

If you have the cash its easy to extend the warranty. Just make sure the one you buy has a full service history.

Hi maomaocat,

I paid 3000 for mine in late May. It’s an MY12 SDV6 SE that i bought second hand with 14,000 on the clock.

If you wait till after its done 20,000 km’s it will cost you more.

Just make sure you get the right Allianz warranty.

Based on experiences on this site, I felt it was good insurance. Also, if you plan to turn over the car in a few years, buyers will prefer a car that still has some factory warranty left.

All the examples we're looking at are around the 30000km mark! :-/

We'd plan on leasing it so I don't know if I can factor that cost into the lease. I'm waiting to hear back from my leasing company on the estimate cost to help us make a decision.

One of the big problems I'm having is balancing the cost of the vehicles vs. the options. Some options seem to be just about required whereas others are truely optional.

I can tell you what I wish I had: I have the standard stereo and think its a step down from the stereo in my previous car, so from that point of view, I would like to have the top end sound system. I also think front Parking sensors would be handy and would also love e-diff. I can live without all of them but will be getting these "options" next time around.

I also don't have a sun roof but don't particularly care about that. I don't have or particularly want a bull bar/winch. I do have a full length roof rack and dual battery system. I am planning on a drawer system that can be taken out when not required. I also want a second set of off road rims and tyres. I'll also be getting Llams, which a search on here will tell you all about.

I guess it really depends on what you plan on doing with the car. Whatever you end up with, it's still an awesome car to drive. I got back into my 2004 Subaru Liberty GT the other day and can't believe how uncomfortable and difficult to drive it is! Previously I thought it was great. Now I've been spoilt.

Oh well!

Re factory options, If you can get a HSE with the Logic7 Stereo upgrade you will end up a very happy man.

I rate the adaptive Bi-xenon headlights as another great option, especially if you do country night driving and believe it or not the centre console cool box gets used on just about every trip.

I could do without the sun roofs next time, eventually you end up with blocked drain tubes and water leaking inside the cabin.. For resale and offload fun a ediff is a really good thing.

FWIW, if buying new, the MY13 can come with either the 19" or 20" as a no cost option for the HSE; I selected the 19" for mine.

Also be aware that the MY13 ICE is faster than those in previous years, and would have more up to date maps.

Personally I found the standard sound system in the HSE more than enough; even with the excellent soundproofing, a car interior is not the place to critically listen to music. Saying that, have to say DAB+ (new option in MY13) sounds much better than I expected.

We're still looking!

We discovered a MB MY13 GL350 is a very tight squeeze, almost impossibly tight, to get into our garage. At least it was fitted with the camera pack.

The D4 HSE I test drove last week didn't have the front cameras so it was even harder.

The D4 is a fair sight cheaper ($40k!) but one of the things I did like about the MB were the blind spot warnings (visible and audible) as well as the lane departure warnings. Is anything like that available for the D4 or slated to be an option in the near future?
