Gear change noise

Ok, another curly one. Changing gears from 3rd 4th or 5th depress clutch and get shudder. Initially thought thrust bearing but not so sure (as no drama 1st to 2nd when input shaft not turning very fast). Will travel along in topgeaes no prob but push clutch for gearchange and get it. Was supposed to be near new clutch as well?!?

Id start out by trying to double declutch it in.

if double declutching gets it in then try changing from hi-low range while stationary with the main gearbox in gear using only the clutch with the engine running. if it grinds you have a dragging clutch.

How commonly do friction plates fall to bits?
Seriously, I think mine is about to.
CAN you buy just a friction plate?
Any leads on cheapies in Melbourne?
How much of a biiatch is dropping a 5 speed compared to lifting out a 3.5?

I've seen them fall to bits, usually from abuse of the clutch pedal.
You should be able to buy the clutch plate, most makers sell them separately.

As for dropping the box, a quick read of another thread suggests it may be easier to lift it out through the cabin.
Remove seats, carpeting, drill out the pop rivets that hold the center floor pan in place and remove that, lift the box out with trusty old workshop crane.
Replace offending clutch plate, may as well do the clutch throwout (thrust) bearing while you're at it.
Reverse that procedure for refitting, fit the center floor plates back in with stainless steel self tapers or PK screws, finish the rest, job done.

That said, it's always easier on paper than in the real world, so make sure there are a couple of cold ones in the garage fridge too.

PS, it's a job I will have to look into soon as my thrust bearing is beginning to sound a little weary.

Check the bell housing bolts are all there and tight, when i bought our old Tdi half the bolts holding the gearbox and motor together were missing, loose or snapped off, matter of fact the only tight ones were across the bottom of the housing.
If you are dropping out the trans stuff you will find out soon enough.
