Hi there, first time poster after being reincarnated.

I have a Disco 3 2009 model and tow and 2.6 tonne boat with hydraulic brakes etc. I'd like to run the earth wire back into the car via the trailer plug.

Will this work as planned?

I.e. is the earth pin actually wired to the body or some other earthing point?

Regards,
Paul

Not sure what you are trying to achieve. The earth for all the trailer plugs is a threaded stud in the rear left storage compartment.

I simply want to know that if I wire my trailer earth via the plug, that It will work without me needing to do anything to the car.

Yes, assuming it is just trailer lights you are running and you don't have LED trailer lights.

I have a LED module that works already from Linear Electonic Design. I am simply going to run the earth back into the car, instead of relying of earthing to the trailer chassis and hitch

Standard 7 or 5 pin trailer wiring already includes an earth pin. It is the white wire.

Sorry - a bit confused - the standard trailer wiring in the car has a earth connection and if you wire an earth in the trailer plug then the trailer will be earthed to the car.

What makes you think it wouldn't be - is all standard unless someone has played around with the system. This earth is relatively lightweight so anything that needs high current like trailer battery charging and fridges then these should be powered by separate cabling and an Anderson plug.

Slightly related. Is the Pin 2 actually connected to reverse?
On dads TDV8 RRS it seems to be going to earth and I haven't had a chance to check my D3.

Komodo,

Pin No.2 is the rear fog light wire. Both the same for Disco & Sport.
This is in the "Black" plug.

Cheers

Cheers. I'll have to change that on my D3. Fog lights are useless to me. We don't get that much fog.

Seems a bit silly as I've never seen a trailer with fog lights...
Plenty of caravans & trailers with reverse lights though...
Always seen pin two called up as "Auxillary / reverse (Black)"
Mind you I've never fully understood trailer wiring colours - white for earth? Black for aux 12+?
