not really sure where to post this, but as it has D3 content here seemed like a good place ...

i've been flying quadcopters for a few years and recently took a trip upto fraser island, along with the quad ... took some video as below, skip to 1:49 for specific D3 content ...
enjoy ...

How much did your toy cost you.
Is it a Go Pro camera?

Aaahhh Fraser.

I see you were heading south from Indian Head when you shot the footage. The erosion has continued pretty savagely in some areas.

I work on the island but haven't been at work for a couple of months (based at Dundubara...herniated L5/S1...again)

I'd love to see some head-to-head vision of your quadcopter vs. Air Fraser Island GA8's around Eli Ck or the Maheno. That would be worth seeing but I would advise against a public posting....CAA prosecutions and all that. One could sit in the comfort of their vehicle at Eli amongst the other 200 vehicles and no-one would know it was your copter that was responsible for the multiple go-arounds as the pilots keep aborting their landings. (just land it up the beach near to your waiting accomplice)

What is the range on your machine/s and radios? And how far can you see before it's game over...into the surf. I'd need 10X power built into my glasses to be able to see it more than 100m away. That aspect of your flying has me intrigued.

Quadcopters and other larger units like octocopters and then into UAVs have a load of useful applications in my line of work - weed control, fire management, assessing compliance with regulations. I won't say the word starting with D.

Very impressive. So can you fly it totally by the vision the copter is taking or does it have to be in view? And to think I was impressed by my robotic vacuum cleaner ha ha

I've seen footage of a Golden Gate Bridge crossing just above the cars that looked good

Hi Tang0au,
That was awesome, having never been to Fraser that was great to see. Thank you for sharing that. Looks like a beautiful place.

Please tell us more about your set up, what model etc. Do you have goggles or a a screen in this FPV setup?

sorry, realise its been ages since posting this ...

happy to see so many people liked the footage !

I certainly made sure I was well clear of the times that aircraft would be approaching, as well as being far enough and low enough away ...

anyway, the setup is a fairly customised team black sheep discovery frame. go pro hero3 black on the front as well as a very wide angle camera for the first person view. this transmits real time video to the goggles i'm wearing while the driver takes car of the car and observer makes sure its in visual range at all times.

in terms of range, the control radio is capable of in excess of 25km, depending on weather & things in the way of the radio. video range is dependant on antennas used on the ground station. normally its around 1km when with my high mobile setup, but a static groundstation will deliver over 10km of video - there are a LOT of dependants on it tho. not to mention the legality of flying out of visual range.

this setup is around $2.5k for copter & ground station hardware. I get around 10 - 15 minutes of flight per battery (and I carry a fair few of them around with me) depending on how its flown & atmospheric conditions.

its not a cheap hobby, but I've had some great times & have some awesome footage of interesting things. have built a few of them for friends too.

I recently installed a gimbal on it for the gopro - it keeps the horizon perfectly level while the frame moves around in flight. makes a big difference to the fluidness & feel of the footage....

What a brilliant piece of fun! I want one.

But I thought their was laws associated with camera's on RC gear?

I have been witness to an Yamaha RMAX in flight, just amazing! - A CASA UAV Controllers Certificate is required to fly them though, and I heard YMA had to take the camera's off them due to a privacy law..

I'm about to start building a quad or T copter but I'm concerned that after the one that flew into the Harbour bridge pylon (that the cops then grabbed) and the one that flew over the fires at Lithgow, the authorities are likely to introduce pilot licences and fees :(
