Hi, I've been thinking of putting a de-mountable box on the back of a 110 pickup, an alloy box with gullwing doors and the rooftop tent on the top more often seen on a tray top.
I'm already thinking that it would be too narrow (looking from the side of the vehicle) though the load height wouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking it might be too unstable when de-mounted, even guyed. Is anyone able to give me the dimensions of the top area of the pick up? I can get the width from my 110, but I'm not sure where the back edge of the cab is on the pickup.
Thanks,

I think from memory I made mine a smidge over 1mt long, (1040?). Cant remember the width at all.
I'm not worried about the stability when off the truck. If captured/locked/braced properly onto the legs, it shouldn't move.

Thanks 29dinosaur, that will help with the plan!

Thanks also to you Chops, I did talk to you about your setup at Melrose, you were in the process of modifying it I think. What did you do about legs for yours?

G'day Peter, sorry I'm having a memory lapse at present, but as far as the new canopy goes, I haven't started yet. But the legs will be made from standard trailer jockey wheels (minus the wheels) with two horizontal bars welded so as they slot into the side of the canopy.
So the back legs will lock in from the back, and the front will slot in from the side. This should hold the canopy fairly stable. Obviously the legs will be extended to reach the ground with a base plate welded on the bottom.
My biggest issue when I do this will be where to store the legs when not in use. They will also be a two piece leg.
Hope that all makes sense :D
yep, I know,, clear as mud

By "pick up" do you mean "ute"? And if you do mean ute (as that is the correct terminology since it was invented in Australia), do you mean a table top or a truck cab?

Thanks Barney, you beat me to it. I hate all these americanisms creeping into our vernacular. Just the same as suv. Like a defender or any station wagon isn't a ute and isn't a sports vehicle so its totally inappropriate and the last thing I want is for us to lose our identity :)

Why are SUVs so called? What sports are they designed for?
Is taking the kids to school and putting prams in the boot a sport now?
Times have changed.

I hate the term SUV, it should be deleted from all Australian text.

I actually thought that pickup was official landrover speak, admittedly I didn't state that I meant a truck cab, but I'm sure some time ago in England It was referred to as 'Truck cab pickup' though I could be wrong.
I'm with you on the Americanisms, though I don't like 'Ute' either!
And Chops, I had thought exactly the same just this Sunday when I looked at the Jocky wheels in Bunnings, cheaper but sturdy!

Nah, suv = sports utility vehicle
And generally sports are based on a competition where two or more opponents are vying for some sort of supremacy over each other. I 'spose getting the best parking spot outside the school gate to pick up the little animals could be considered "sport".
