View Full Version : Designing a tray for a 130

I just purchased a new 2013 130 tub back after owning numerous 110's including a 2010 110 puma the 130 seems to meet my needs quite well so far although I do miss the traction control and ABS of the previous 110 and the new 2.2 seems to have more go than the 2.4 it does have a terrible attribute with the ECU holding revs on gear change that makes driving it annoying sometimes....anyways back on topic, as mentioned it is a tub back and for what I need the ute for a tub back is not suitable so a tray is the next step but I have a slight dilemma and that is wheel base!!
The tub is 1700x1700 roughly and my measurement from outside of tyre wall to outside of tyre wall is 1900mm due to running 285/75r16 16x8 neg25's so what I am wondering is what options do I have ? I am going to be making a tray that roughly looks similar to the Michelle trays on cruisers etc etc but I think a tray that's 1900mm wide will look terrible as it is considerably wider than the cab so is there any other designs or guards that can be made to accommodate this or will I have to get new wheels  any photos of trays would be great :)

I would use flat rubber (or even plastic garden edging) for flares with a tray.

Also many trays fitted to 130's suffer broken mounts. This problem can be due to mounting the tray inappropriately.

Land Rover put out a guide in pdf format for adding trays, or whatever to their cab chassis models. It was posted on aulro some time back. You should read that and understand what is required. It also gives the dimensions for the mount locations.

Edit: here are the more relevant parts:

I too have just purchased a 130HCPU albeit a 2001 model, and am thinking about a tray back.

Im pretty sure Chris's tray on his county dual cab would be around 1800-1900 wide, it covers his 285s on neg 25 rims ok. You should go take a look at that, in the mean time do you still have the flares off the county? put the rears on this for now.

Hi. Nice looking 130. What rims are they and what load rating? TIA.:)

My next vehicle may be a dual cab if not a late model RR. I intend to go cab chassis with a tradesmans back unit from someone like Roscos Trademate.
I would get this with the twin spare wheel mount, under tray drawer, water tanks and tool boxes.
However it is getting less and less likely it will be a 130, this day and age no ABS or traction control and a lot less options it will probablly be a VW Amorak (often 0% interest and I can get corporate discount of about $9k on top of any other deal I can negotiate before telling them about corporate discount, just had a friend do this and the salesman went white when he brought this up). I can do this at VW, Ford and Holden and will investigate others.
I would genuinely love a 130 but LR are just not competitive at the moment, every other dual cab supplier atm offering low to zero finance LR stiil some of the highest finance.

Just saw a picture of my 130. I am glad Wayne was able to post it for you. It would easily cover the 1900 you need. I welded up the side rails (mandrel bends & tube) and attached them to the tray this gives wider protection for sliding along deep washouts. Extending just outside this is the alloy guards. Legally (NSW) you need to cover the tread of the tyre not to the outer wall. These guards remove in a couple of minutes to hammer back straight and keep the vehicle looking respectable. They have been beaten back straight a few times. The rails also support the guards. The tray is 1800x1800. The head board is 75mm tube. Again mandrel bends are available in this size.

Craig, not sure if LR were ever competitive, or listened to the market. But 0% finance means they can't move them. So like Detroit city, ford, or even GM perhaps the brand might just vanish.
I do find however I don't need ABS, Traction Control, Stability Control, and bells to tell me the door is open, or that the seat belt unlatched. My old looking new 130 just doesn't go like the clappers so I don't need all the other stuff to save my life. I just use me, and it's 4 disc brakes.
I also find some comfort when all the other brands are plummeting in value, the trusty Defender just slowly drops to a very good second hand value. That is if it ever gets put on the market. Maybe that is worth a few % on the finance through LR.

Mines 1950 wide means I can sleep side ways and have storage forward its 2700 long 130 single cab but but I did have to fit extra width mirrors its all a compromise but ...ps I love the look of the dual cab but

Here's the rear of my old 130. It now lives in Sydney but was a great truck. Replaced by a 101! Anyway, here's the tray. If you want more pics PM me as most are already on here somewhere! :)

Is there a tray mounting guide like the one on the first page for a 110?

I have posted the complete guide, which covers 110, 130 single cab, and 130 dual cab Defenders. It is in the "Files" section (click on Files at top right of all forum pages), under the category "Technical Manuals".

Some pictures due to a request. Included is the start of a canopy that fits the tray and mirrors the head board.

This is an old post of mine, but if your building a tray on a 130 single cab, don't do what my body builders did, throw the factory mounts away and fabricate new ones...I had three 130s that need the trays pulled off and repaired for cracked mounts...hope the photos are linked on this??

I finally had a chance to lift the tray off my 130 puma to repair the front cracked tray mounts. I ended up bending up some 5mm plate, sleeving the original mounts internally and dropping the reinforcement down further on the chassis for better support. Then used 8mm high tensile bolts to secure the supports to the chassis, welded the supports on the outside of the chassis(not linking the welds to avoid cracking the chassis) and then fitted the folded 5mm top section to the mounts to ensure sideways movement is limited, rubber blocked the tray and lifted it back on.
Its much quiter and looking at the tray movement behind the rear window whilst on rough dirt roads, its definately stiffened things up...time will tell when im fully loaded and lifting wheels if its worked or not!

Yeah those factory mounts are pretty special... :lol2:

SItec is a very helpful guy as I asked a very similar question recently ! No doubt he could just send the same info to you.

Hi sorry for wakening this old thread.
Is the manual you posted "Defender Cab Chassis Conversion Manual"?

Thanks
