View Full Version : Tyre wear issue - need ideas

Since I have had the D3 (five years 134,000k), the left front tyre has always worn unevenly. It tends to scrub on the outside.
I have had numerous wheel alignments and the front ball joints and bushes were replaced a couple of years ago. They currently seem OK.
The current set of Yoko Geolandar ATs 265/60/18 (6000 km) are showing the same wear (which is no surprise really). Before I put the car in for another alignment and rotation, I would love some suggestions on what to look for.
Any help will be much appreciated
Cheers

Take a set of cam bolts, eccentric washers & nuts with you get them replaced also. You may find they tighten up but have a worn thread which can cause the bolt to slip & then undo your alignment.

I think that with the proliferation of roundabouts on our road systems what you are describing is becoming more prevalent, it certainly wears the outside of my font passenger tyre, so now I tend to go slow on the roundabouts and am rotating the front more often.
Re caster bolts, having had mine replaced several years ago, I now issue instructions to fully undo the nuts before attempting any adjustment.

Also quite natural to corner right faster.

When on the road I don't notice it, used to live in the country normal drive was at least 50 -60klms. all good mainly straight country roads.
However in town or the city I find that I am on full lock turn doing right u-turns, can't remember when I hit full lock turning left ?
Certainly under those conditions the left front tyre shows outside tread wear, the roundabouts don't help either.
With a heavy van 3tonnes+ on the tail I find that both rears wear on the outside, that was with a rigid axle tug, have not had the D3 long enough to give an opinion.
I thought that was why we rotate them regularly ?

Yes that is why we rotate them regularly, but I have recently moved and it seems that the wear is increasing, there is one horrible off camber and very tight right turn roundabout that I have to go thorugh regularly. I don't want to have to rotate every 5000km. 10000 should be about right I would have thought. Current tyres have been on for 6000 km and the wear on the left front is already quite pronounced.
Might have to find a way to avoid the roundabout, once the tyres are rotated. See if it makes a difference.
