why didnt you put your foot on the clutch? (or if its an auto) why didnt you throw it into neutral?

or

why didnt you turn the ignition off? (which may not apply depending on how their start/stop button is programmed)

Nah! not a good idea to switch off,no motor = no vacuum = no disc brake capability.

Neutral or Park would have been the way to go,would have screwed the transmission but one would have lived to tell the tale.

Design regs require that there remain enough vac assist for at least one full power application of the brakes after engine shutdown.

Well it is in America so this would explain why they have not done any of the normal things you expect to do to stop a car.
