Hi all,
I have been working on a quick and easy way to mount Comms equipment in my D4 and keep all the seating capability for day to day city driving.
I have developed a basic support system that may be of interest to people.
The attached PDF file is my basic concept. I am still fine tuning the mechanics to ensure there are no sharp edges and all cabling is tucked away from little fingers. It works for me and my needs to maintain boot space.
The HF radio is a Icom 706Mk2G, and it complements the Codan 9350 mounted on the Kaymar rear Bar with my home brew height adjustable mount.
This works a treat, especially after a new earth strap.

Hi VK3GJM
A Sat phone is a lot neater sorry but after a lot of out back work I found the HF radio to hit and miss better IMHO to just speak to the person you want to speak to. Just my opinion

I agree, A Sat phone is much better.
You can send text messages to home or who ever then they can call you back without the premium cost of an out wood bound call.
Just don't hire the phone at the edge of the desert, much cheaper to hire for extra days from a city based company.
We hired ours from a Brisbane company but when we where in Birdsville the lady at the Tourist Information service asked if we could do them a favour and deliver 3 units to Mt Dare. So we had 4! You'd think you would get some sort of thank you in Mt Dare but no - nothing.
Used the phone daily including phoning the Birdsville Roadhouse 250km away to order in a Patrol Alternator.

Hi connock.
No issues Conneck. I prefer to be in control of a radio medium that allows me to dictate frequency, conditions and my terms of operation. Although HF is more complex to understand, access to thousands of ears across thousands of frequencies makes me much more settled when in places where direct sat phone coverage is not possible.
Your opinion is reality.

No dramas every one has there preferences I like the idea that, say I'm in the Simpson desert I can ring the Birdsville road house that has a recovery vehicle rather than chatting to someone in Cape York with the comment GOOD LUKE MATE, thats all. I wasn't having a go in any way in fact what you have done looks quite tidy.

Hi Lucas,
When you remove the rear tail lights, there are two bone colour solid grommets. When you also remove the louvre went access to inner and outer skin can be gained with ease to run a number of cables on an angle.
Sealing the grommet with automotive silicone is easy and the light fits back on with space for cable entry.
I ran 2 x quality Huber & Suhner double braid coax, Codan 9350 control cable and a double insulated 10mm2 cable.
Left and right side have the same grommets 2 each side, each can be accessed when the vent louvre is removed.
Regards
Gerald
