If the economy do not improve drastic measures have to be taken to maintain that family.
Perhaps reduce the welfare payments for the sick

From what i understand, the royals bring way more into the country via the tourism industry than they actually cost. And in any case, as pointed out above, they like Land Rovers. Pretty good ambassadors for our brand LOL

Good luck to them but the hysteria generated by this event through wondrous publications like Women's Weekly, No Idea and the like is totally over the top.

In traffic yesterday afternoon I could not find a station on the radio that was not going on and on about her going into labour. One was telling the reporter that she was in labour and so the baby was going to be born and that they had taken her to the hospital by car!!!!

I would have thought a teletransporter or at least a hovercraft full of eels:o

Seriously, the next few weeks are going to be painful to the max every time we turn on the TV or the radio listening to this drivel.

God help us all:(

It raises a good point , but then how much does it cost us here in Australia to keep all our poly's ,both past and present ,In both State and Federal , in the life style that they have become a custom to ? Unlike that report they show the sums of money , I don't recall ever seeing any annual figures printed out here , I think if we did you would be horrified!! :)

Well perhaps we need the politicians but the govenors?
Quentin Bryce's salary is $394,000.
The salary of the South Australia Governor is based on 75% of the salary payable to a judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia (s 73 of the Constitution Act 1934).
NSW governor's salary of A$181,555.
I do not know the other governor salaries and the cost of maintaining their office and house.
For sure there is plenty money that can be used for hospitals or other well justified humanitarian things

It has been "painful to the max" leading up to the birth. I had a laugh at the overhead shot of all of the reporters outside of the hospital, I hope they put a pair of sunnies on the poor kid for his first step outside otherwise he will be blinded by all of the flashes going off.

Hi Chucaro I agree I don't think that the Stats need a Governor in any of the States , plus all there staff . If I had my way I'd get rid of the lot that would save the tax payers millions every year!!.

A sight more than just their wages, just think of all the Minders, Spin Doctors, Advisers, Heads of Departments and Party Boys with jobs ( jobs for the Boys ).

Then what did we get for the all money spent by our Government when the Queen visited Hobart back in the early 50's, for Her first time?
A lap around the local football ground and a quick wave!

A lesson here, don't feel too bad if you have a tax minimisation scheme and choose to spend your charitable instalment on the local oncology ward.

I take a different view.
Congats and best wishes to the Royal Family.
History, tradition, National values and identity are worth preserving and fighting for. Even here our values and respect for tradition and identity are being undermined visibly on a daily basis.
Britain has a fascinating history on all levels including the Monarchy.
The royals and their history and visual tradition and ceremany bring in billions of pounds to the British economy each year. This is just one reason that millions of tourists flock to Britain each year. Take the Tower of London as an example, steeped in the history of the Monachy and a must see for tourists. I think that very few tourists would be flocking the places in Britain where the street signs are no longer in English but arabic !!!
That is worth preserving in my view.
I am not a Monachist nor a republican and I am sad to see the way things are heading everwhere. We are rushing to change who we are with nothing of an alternative being offered. What model of this brave new world do we wish to become ? Do I live in a better world today in my view ?
Nuh.

I think its good news when any family has a new addition. but why slag off the Royal Family?
Australia has had a chance to have its say via referendom. We are the lucky country and it aint broke, so dont try and fix it!
If you where born here, fair enough. But if you choose to come here and you dont like it I say, respectfully, you are free to leave. And before anyone has a go at me, I emigrated here too.
Just my thoughts.

Cheers

"When bub ascends the throne" he will have to take another name and not use his own. It's an ancient royal tradition.

It's estimated that a quarter of a billion pounds will be spent this weekend on royal baby gear, I wonder how many toy land rovers will be sold

I like the name, especially George, remembering the Wartime King, and Lord Louis Mountbatten, who paid a visit to our Warship ,H.M.A.S. Brisbane, when at Portsmouth for the Queens Silver Jubilee Review. Bob . From BBC News

Royal baby: Why George Alexander Louis?

By Finlo Rohrer BBC News Magazine
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/07/338.jpg A familiar name among British kings... George III, George V and George VI

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first baby has been named George Alexander Louis. But what's in the name?

It is a partial victory for the old maxim, "the bookmakers are never wrong". George was the rock-solid favourite for boys' names for a while, backed all the way down to 2/1. Alexander and Louis were both not far behind.

A cynic might point out that before we knew it was a boy, Alexandra - the Queen's first middle name - had been the favourite.

Of the three names, it is the significance of the third that is most obvious. Louis immediately makes one think of Louis Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and last viceroy of India, who was killed by the IRA in a bomb attack on his yacht.

His father Prince Louis of Battenberg was Prince William's great-great-grandfather. Louis is also one of William's middle names. And, of course, the name of 17 kings of France (or 18 or 19, depending how you count).

If Louis honours one side of the Royal Family, George clearly resonates with the other.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/07/339.jpg The boy called George

Despite St George being the patron saint of England, it took the arrival of a German king, George I, to cement the name's place in England. Long a popular name in Germany, it has Greek roots.

There have since been five other Georges to sit on the throne. George III, king during the loss of the American colonies, is perhaps now best known for his mental illness thanks to Alan Bennett's play and the subsequent film adaptation.

His son George was a figure who certainly attracted more than his share of criticism. Arguably the best-known portrayal of him was by Hugh Laurie in the third series of Blackadder (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22887110). In that comedy, he is a drunken, philandering fool of spectacularly limited grace and intelligence.

The real George was certainly both a drinker and womaniser who ate too much - the Times labelled him an "inveterate voluptuary" - but also an imaginative town planner, an ambitious patron of the arts and, most probably, not an idiot.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/07/340.jpg The name George plays a part in British life in many ways

The most recent Georges reigned through two world wars. It was George V who declared war on Germany in 1914, pitting him against his first cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm II. George V recognised the strength of anti-German feeling and changed the Royal Family's name from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more English sounding Windsor.

It was his son George VI whose struggles with his stutter are so movingly depicted in The King's Speech. Christened Albert and known to his family as Bertie, but crowned as George, he's a reminder that the monarch has the final say on their regnal name.

On the other hand, Alexander has never been the name of a king of England or the UK, but was borne by three kings of Scotland.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/07/341.jpg Greatness follows the name Alexander

And yet for any parent naming their child Alexander, it must be hard not to hear the phrase "the Great" sotto voce immediately afterwards.

Alexander famously conquered much of the known world and is often described as the best general ever to live. But he was not a well-rounded individual. An epic binge drinker who once killed a friend with a spear in a drunken rage, he only made it to the age of 32 before either ill health or well-disguised murder did for him.

The two other rulers of Macedon to bear his name were both murdered but that has not stopped the name being popular with rulers down the ages.

Perhaps the least successful Alexander was the sole Byzantine emperor to bear that name.

Of him, historian Viscount Norwich said: "The only good thing that can be said of the reign of the Emperor Alexander is that it was mercifully short."

This Alexander supposedly died after an ill-advised game of polo in very hot weather. Modern Alexanders might want to heed his example.
