Opinions required

I need to replace the locking wheel nuts on my Defender, the key and the nuts are worn, must be soft!!

The consensus on here that I have read is to replace them with standard nuts unless you are in an area prone to getting wheels stolen.

So I have a choice.

Full set of 5 locking nuts and key from LR for $199

Replace the 5 nuts with standard wheel nuts (genuine LR part RRD500560) at $23 a wheel from a dealer.

Or after market ones for $ 13.70 delivered per wheel. Land Rover Parts - WHEEL NUT - L/ROVER DEF+DISC+R/ROVER (ALLOY WHEELS)(CAPPED) (http://www.roverparts.com.au/inc/sdetail/4307)

so the question is, does anyone have any experience with the after market ones? and is it worth the extra $10 per wheel to have genuine?

cheers
Pat

Locking wheel nuts are a PITA IMHO.
I've never needed them fortunately, and replaced mine.

Can't comment on the aftermarket ones, but there's always plenty of genuine ones in good nick, online for cheap.

Hi Skoller,
How long did they take to arrive? Also would be interested in your opinion on the quality.

thanks
Pat.

Just bought a Disco 2 and the previous owner had removed the stainless skins from all the wheelnuts for some unknown reason, replaced them all for $220 + PP with the above, including the locknuts. That was 5 weeks ago and they are still looking good.

Ray

I got the same wheel nuts from British 4WD, only 5, a couple of weeks ago, they took about a week to arrive.
Excellent quality, a perfect match for the original wheel nuts

Locknuts are nothing but trouble IMHO.
My Defender has had the locknuts replaced with a standard nut. Luckily there isn't really a wheel theft racket running up here, at least not Land Rover wheels anyway ;)

Can't comment on the aftermarket ones?

Going through same problem myself. Changing to standard nuts. Make sure you keep a lock nut on the spare at the very least.

My wheel nuts took about a week to arrive also but there is a slight difference to the originals and also a bit shinier but once they get dirty you wont be able to tell.

Hello,
I had an issue where the locking nut was done up too tight and it stripped the 'key way' on the nut! I had to use a cold chisel to remove the lock nut! Lucky it was in the driveway at home and not in the middle of nowhere..... They are bloody stupid things that are made far too soft......
I ordered 4 of these....

Land Rover Parts - WHEEL NUT - L/ROVER DEF+DISC+R/ROVER (ALLOY WHEELS)(CAPPED) (http://www.roverparts.com.au/inc/sdetail/4307)

Perfect match to orig, I they were Britpart if my memory serves me correct....

Thanks all for your input, I have placed an order for 5 wheel nuts from Rover Parts $67 delivered, I will leave the locking one on the spare but keep the 5th wheel nut in the cubby just in case, I think the key I have for the locking nuts has maybe 1 or 2 goes left in it.

Hopefully they will be here before I leave for Cooktown in a couple of weeks.

cheers
