One of my fondest childhood holiday memories was going up to an Aunt and Uncle of mine in central NSW, The Uncle would take us out rabbiting, shooting and general thrashing about the paddocks in an old S1 shorty, mercilessly bouncing about while your eyes stung from the petrol fumes in the cab and endless amounts of crap slewed about around your feet and in the back.
Once we had done all that we would come back at night frozen to the core covered in god knows what sort of grime and Auntie Katie would step into gear and get us off to the bathroom while she dished up some hot meal and sweet tea and generally doted on us, cranked up the fire and played squatter or baked a cake. At sparrow fart she would get us all on the move again feed us up till bursting point and send us off out the door to tear about the paddocks doing man stuff with my Uncle.
These two were the salt of the earth, no airs and graces, had bugger all and asked for the same. We always had fun there, loved belting about the place and I guess in hindsight the simplicity. Gordon loved showing us farming stuff which we never had seen, Katie was always there with a smile and a rye joke and looked after us ridiculously well and was always disappointed to see us go. Good times
I certain this is were my affection for nuggety old Landies came from. So I think its only appropriate after some discussion with my Mum, Katies sister, that I've decided that when I took owner ship of this old girl during the week I think I'm going to leave her as she is, good, honest and no airs and graces , I dips me lid to my Auntie Katie.

Looks good
All the best

She's a 2 litre , as far as I know.
Its not too bad a condition, no rust in chassis. A couple of issues to sort out, but looking forward to taking her for a run on the weekend

Yes leave it as is a survivor like mine. But if you really want to get rid of all the airs and graces etc and remember your childhood with the correct amount of reality then you wont want that Smiths Heater. I will gladly take it from you and even give you a carton of your favourite beverage in return.

That would be great Mike, Are going to make another epic journey in Borumbah ? I'm working close to home for the most part, Let me know how you go, next Wednesday 31st and the weekend 3- afternoon of the 5th I'm away from town

Not sure when the RDO is but it would be a safe bet I get rained off at least one day while your around home. Im giving Borumbah a rest and flying over this time. Seeing you wont part with your smiths I might have to get one of these modern ones they look pretty snazzy and you can get all the vents and hose etc. A bit of grey paint and some ball bearings in a bag and I could have it looking antique pretty quick.

One of the original issues I need to fix on Katie, is the lack of a working wiper on the drivers side and one on the passenger side that has a sweep rate of about 1 per minute. With a heap off stuff on at the moment Ive taken the slackers option I've hunted this up off biased boats for 56 bucks and it was delivered in about two days, lets see how it goes.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/07/287.jpg (http://s191.photobucket.com/user/magilla0_2/media/IMG_20130727_081704.jpg.html)

The reactions I've had while spinning about town have been pretty pleasing, old boys veering across the road while checking her out, onother fella giving her a thumbs up and even one lady telling me she "its so cute" (pretty sure she was referring to Katie any way).

But she let the team down last night when the fuel pump stopped, the lights gave out and she was towed home in disgrace.............with my son in the lead, his first casualty towing experience, and hopefully that is the last time I have to suffer that. I'm sure I said to him, gently , slow, don't race up to the intersection and don't swerve at the last moment before you encounter a parked car.....:censored: surely that's what I said

Fuel issue turns out to have been crap in the pump, disconnected hoses and gave it a blow out........guessing that means the filter has been fitted to the wrong side in the system, is there an issue with running a filter either side of the pump (Facet brand) ?
Lights working again , fuses needed to be cleaned up, its a dodgy fuse set up so maybe I might giver her a new fuse box

Wipers are on. First impressions, a bit noisy but I guess the sound of the car will drown them out, work at different speeds and they are supposedly 110 degree sweep but doesn't appear to be enough.........but they work

That was the first thing I did too :)
I cant get a bike in my tray with both wheels on so I installed a mount to drop the front fork into. Works for QR but I'm still trying to figure out how to mount a 15mm through axle.

Hah Mike, that's the sort of sales pitch I like, I am lucky in the fact that I have a steel tray so could just drill through the RHS that makes the frame. I guess if you put in some nice heavy plate it should work in the Ally tub.
Saturday through to Monday lunch time I'm pretty tied up with a course but lets see how we go, I had another fella drop in the other day whos doing up a 50/80 and cast an eye over the cars, it was really good to chat to another S1 buff

Yup, a tragic it seems. My yard is big, but filling fast as I pick up a chassis for the salvaged ute on Sunday. My mothers yard is also big, surely she wont notice a rusting hulk or two up the back ( my step father is partly to blame after all ) and my mate has two farms, that contains a collection of mine and his.
Back when I was married this sort of behavior would have been nipped in the bud before it began.........now there's a double edged sword

So I decided that I would replace the exceptionally dodgy fuse box in the engine bay. Yes I should have planned for every event I know, I've abandoned that job for tonight as I have now got to go get me some new wires tomorrow. At least two are like this and run well back into the outer sheathing, this particular lot head into the dash so god only knows what they run. And naturally the stuffed green wire is joined to a black wire and the stuffed black wire to a green one. And then there is a red one connected to a blue one

Ok so I've done the burnt wires and replaced the fuse box.
Now I have a drivers side headlight that barely glows while the passenger side is perfect. I'm assuming if it was blown there would be nothing at all, or one beam or the other would work, any ideas

Make sure you have the Earth, High Beam and the Low beam feeds in the right orientation on the pins on the back of the light.

The Horizontal pin is your Lowbeam Filament, the Vertical pins are the High beam and the common, which in your case should be earth. If you get the Earth and The High beam wires cross over it will light up dull on Low beam as it back feeds through the high beam filament "looking" for an earth. High Beam will be full brightness whatever way you put them around!

Thanks Andy,
I didn't have the lights out though, and its only one that is the issue, Maybe I will look at the earth wires still just in case one is off, loose

A very nice looking series one you have there. The bench seat is interesting. Has it just been made up in one piece with an underside that is identical to the individual squabs? It would be good to see a pic of the underside of it.

Do you know how many sweeps per minute that motor does?

I may need to change mine for engineering here in NSW and they want two speed with the fast speed no slower than 45 sweeps per minute.

Thx

Yorkshire John. The ones I got are single speed and do about 41 per minute. There are two speed ones but they are a different shape to mine and the Landy version. I put "boat windscreen wiper, two speed, 45 sweep" into Google and got quite a few hits. I also found that BIAS Boats had a two speed version as well @ $120 a piece Wiper Motor - Heavy Duty | Cabin & Galley | Horns, Wipers & Glove Boxes (http://www.biasboating.com.au/Wiper_Motor_Heavy_Duty_p/4562.htm)

Sooooo, the "Katie" and i made it to the You Yangs mountain bike park today, shes started to get a bit hot in the last 30 k on the way there ( ive got an overflow bottle that picked up about two litres of coolant ) and also had what i thought might be a fuel vaporising issue ....... but about 40 k into the trip home she stopped, I suspect its water in the fuel tank. I only fitted a new pump the other day that cant be the issue surely. Funnily enough the pump was working again when I git her home so I was able to drive off the trailer

But good grief in a cross wind like we were getting hit with in SW Vic. today driving her is a very ......engaging experience, I swear I got arm pump and my shoulders know about it

magilla

Ok my learned friends, I want to take the fuel pick up out of the tank so I can check/clean the gauze filter on the end.
Anyone have any good tips for getting the screws out of the top of the tank. They are in pretty solid and it looks like someone at some stage has had a go at getting them out and flared the screws slots, needless to say its not helping

magilla
24th August 2013, 01:42 PM
Judging by the thin layer of petrol and the large layer of water, I'd best drain the tank...

I recon one of the gurus here said inline filters don't suit the su fuel pumps...

Hi
A in_line fuel filter offers no impedance to fuel unless it is blocked with crap
so a SU pump will work very happy with one between it and the carby

Awesome....ish,
After a heap of stuffing about rewiring then having the ignition assembly from the 88 pulled apart so I could get keys cut for it , and fitting that to Katie she ran like a dream, dismissing my thoughts and days of tinkering thinking its been a fuel issue..........right up to the point where the clutch buggered up. Cant select a gear while she's running so I have to start in gear and then when we get to where we are going turn her off and hope we are in the right spot.
The level of frustration I am feeling at the moment is inexplicable , even to a Landy owner

I figure you've been through you're clutch linkages ? could be something's snapped externally or ajustmemt out of wack.... I had a bad lurch when / if I started mine in gear with the pedal down .... Was advised to park it up against a tree and start it up... Plate was sticking to flywheel.... Worth a try ....it did fix up my issue and the fella that told me reconed sticking was quite common..

no loose bits prior to where it enters ..ie i had the peddle spin around on the shaft then grip again....ie under wheel arch....and by logic thered be another conection at the change of direction....little bit herelittle bit there made a heap of difference in mine ...seems that as she was running then wouldent release that its a breakage or a slip n misujustment thing....i recon{and know bugger all } id undo the bolt through the leaver that holds the peddle and get someone to work it from the wheel arch and see if theres a difference....then check that theres the same kinda movement at the peice that turns the bit that dosent turn enough{input into g box........hmmm now you know why im not a science teacher{or english for that matter}

just had a look at mine and the spare box ,that shaft the polt passes through{hollow with two holes} only needs to turn 10 degrees {calculated by watch ie 12 oclock to 1 or under} ...theres more movement but its the 10 that works the forks.......are the holes the bolt go through flogged out? a little bit of 10 seconds is a lot and its only light steel into the box i wonder if you can either see how it travels into the box in relation to the bolt{slop i guess}.....thats what i was getting at with unbolt the peddle then see if you get more movement at the bolt{ the bolt in the video looks to move a similar amount to mine}

has someone dodgied it up with a bigger bolt because the two holes are a bit flogged out? looks like you only have one hole in that input shaft?
if so id go bigger till i get a better one

Found that the hole in the shaft from the gearbox is a bit flogged out, also found that the pin that connects that small sleeve to the linking shaft was broken. So went and raided the ute in the paddock for pins and such and will work on that tomorrow.
I've looked at the SOLRC forum and there seems to be a bit of consistency in feedback about clutches not working because of sticking plates. so once I've looked at the linkages and stuck the floor back in I might see if I can create some clutch slippage......

magilla
13th September 2013, 06:32 AM
Soooooooo, Katie Katie Katie.
Gearbox has been out and all the plates seem fine although the clutch was soaked in oil. Could be that the lay shaft holes were flogged out and one of the pins were broken. Thankfully a couple of weeks back i picked up another chassis which has been resto'd, thankfully it looks like the gearbox had been too and the lay shaft in it was schmicko. Subsequently it has been pillaged and the parts fitted to Katie.
While she has been layed up at the mechanics a crack was found in the exhaust manifold, new and terminal. So I scrounged another out of the salvaged 109 and that's been cleaned up and fitted.
And then, just to display her indignation at the whole process the water pump started to hemorrhage green fluid all over the place and a new one was ordered up. When its gone to be fitted it seems the previous times it crapped itself the holes in the block have been tapped out to take bigger bolts and the holes in the pump casing drilled out even bigger to accept said bolts. Naturally enough the new repro pump doesn't have enough meat in the casing to drill out the holes enough to match the bolt sizes. So now the last hope seems to be helicoils.

The mischievous Miss Katie returns home, the mechanic wants me to call her Pandora.
Flogged out lay shaft and pins, oils soaked clutch plate, broken exhaust manifold, replace the rest of the exhaust system, problematic water pump replacement, replaced the many different sized or missing bolts in the floor and roof with some nice new ones.
