I have mmmm come by some Gel cell / SLA batteries . 24 ah. Secondhand but with heaps of life still in them. There simular to batteries used in wheel chairs, flat pancake like.
Looking for some ideas as to what to use them for.

+1.

A selection of independent 12V LED downlights in your most important rooms lets you ignore the worst effects of a power failure. Six 5W downlights in the kitchen, a slow combustion heater and a gas stove lets us cope with the hardship of outages and doesn't lead to burning the house down with candles falling over.

You don't need solar panels either. A good quality battery charger off the mains will do too, the same one you occasionally put on the family's pet LR.

Would be great for a backup power source for my aquaponics systems ;)

Correct.

I run my house led lights on a separate 12v system of gel cells charged by a couple of old 80w solar panels. 5w led downlights inside and 27w floodlights outside. Works great.

modify childern's toys (ie NERF guns)

we made some pretty cool NERF gun cappable of bruising by strapping those style batteries to them & a few other mods
