View Full Version : Wheel wobble - eliminating culprits

Hi peeps
For some time now I've had a "wheel wobble" through the steering wheel under light braking, occasionally quite unpleasant, but I'm undecided as to what the culprit is.

I know I need new tyres, but I don't think it's a wheel balance issue as it would be there at a certain sustained speed/acceleration and only occurs when braking. So I'm thinking it could be a warped disk.

Is this common? I ask as, maybe a 3 or 4 years ago, I had to put new rotors on because of the same thing......I don't think I do a lot of hard braking and let's face it it's a Td5 not a blown 350Z :p

Tie-rod ends/ball joints could also cause it but they seem ok. Can I tell if it's the disk just by taking the wheel off and rotating it through the caliper?

Any thoughts?
Cheers
Mike

Warped discs would be the first place I was looking if it only occurs while braking.

If it is high speed (100kph) light braking, ie light application of the pedal, then yes I would agree brake discs

Get the runout checked to confirm

Worn steering and suspension components could also be a culprit, depending on conditions

Front shocks or Steering damper is worth a look, if a bush on one side is knackered it can cause a wobble.

loose brake calipers, certainly caused it on mine.

Thanks guys!
As I'd suspected, the disks seem to be the most likely cause. A bit miffed about that, I'd need to look at my paperwork, but if I've done about 100,000 kms in the 6 years I've had Larry, I reckon these disks have done 50,000 at the most. :(

The steering damper is probably original and next to useless, but I think the bushes are ok - I'll check though... and the Konis too.

At least a pair of disks is one of the more reasonable items on a D2 :p:angel:

My money is on the disk rotors.

I am with you Dave

It will be the rotors

On my wifes D2 we had the same problem put slotted rotors on the front with a softer brake pad fixed the problem.
Had old rotors machined to go back on again when the others need machining.
The D2 has done 60,000k and the rotors are almost in need of machining.:):)

Yeah, they don't last that long

Especially if you get a bit of heat in them - towing, traction control etc

Hmmm, so it might be possible to machine it out rather than replace them? I'd prefer to do that at this point in time if it's feasible as I need to spend some $ on the transfer case in preference...
