Hi, pushing on for tonights job, wondering the consensus on which way to jump with the metal P gasket.
Add some decent gasket goob, or trust the little crush ring on the gasket.

thanks

Definitely use some quality silicon. I had to do the job all over again when I didn't use any. You don't want to have to do that.

I use hylomar #3 aka loctite #3, loctite 515 or stag.

my preference is the #3 and making sure that both surfaces are spotless, flat, dry and not shiny. Slight buffing with 300 grit wet and dry usually gets the required surface finish for the goops to work best.

When I did the p-gasket on my old Disco, I didn't use any sealer. I hate using silicon and hate it even more when I have to clean it off someone else's dodgy repair. My philosophy is that if sealer isn't recommended by the manufacturer, then don't use it!

I gave the surfaces a good scrape and then cleaned them up with wet and dry until they were perfectly clean.

The gasket was still fine when I sold the car and I'm sure it still is.

and thats a fair point as well.

but in some cases your not using the sealant for its sealing capabilities, you're using it for its anti-corrosion properties.

And I've tried all the ones Dave listed and it's still leaking :(

I can make things gas tight at stupid high pressures, but can't stop bloody coolant.....

I use aviation sealant on everything used it on p gasket water pump thermostat housing a bit on hoses especially from header tank .
which I think I will replace with a alloy one.
even use it on maxi drive flanges where flange meets the hubs
highly recommended for vacuum pump which when replacing should be replaced with booster , leaking vacuum pump solved did that 80000 ks ago still no problems been 110,000ks for the water pump and p gasket
still fine;)

why would you put OAT in a tdi?

you havent been charging customers to do the P gasket in the td5 again have you JC, thats almost as bad as the ford dealership trying to charge me to change the spark plugs in a defender.

Naa, he's **** stirring me a I used to use OAT.

My last of the Tdi's came with it ;) (and the Cold Climate PAS fluid)

BTW, love the spark plugs in a diesel, wonder thye didn't bill you for a carby clean/overhaul and a set of points and a condenser :lol2:

Thanks lads. I considered my options given it was 7.30 at night,
I reached for the only one on the shelf. Permatex aviation form a gasket No 3. Hopefully it will do the job.

I used a paper gasket last to e and it worked fine only leaking now because it was disturbed when I changed the pump

My old disco leaked like sieve from that spot , I replaced gaskets and tried all different sealants (it ended up being a quick job after i did it that many times) without any luck .
The final straw saw me remove the big alloy housing and lay it on a flat piece of glass with bearing blue on it . The thing was warped to all buggery . spent a hour or so with a file then rub stone , got it all tru and put in a new gasket without anything on it and it was still leak free after another 100K km's.
Hope this helps

And that's exactly what I'll end up doing, the metal gasket should seal without a sealant........
